i'm probably going to take a break for a while until the game gets further along with the patches.
i'd like to know how long my character can stay inactive until it is deleted.
if anybody knows of course.

They don't delete on this game unlike in FFXI before iirc
XI always had the possibility of them eventually deleting a character, but I knew of some people who came back after being gone for years and everything was still intact.
thanks for the answers guys.
wouldn't really know what to think if i came back and all of my hard work was suddenly gone.
They have the right to delete any unused (or even used) account they see fit. You are only renting it. That being said, they're usually good with just letting it gather dust so you can blow the dust off and pop back in at a later date.
Every MMO reserves the right, in their TOS, to delete your character as they see fit. That being said, I cant think of one that ever has, since it would SUBSTANTIALLY decrease the likelyhood of getting a customer return to check out new patches or content. It's just a bad business move.
It's bad for business to delete unused accounts since big patches and expansions always bring people back. If those people find their level 50 (or whatever) gone, they'll be a might upset. As an example, a few months ago I reloaded EQ1 (out of nostalgia) after not playing it for 10 years and all my characters were still there. Can't speak for SE directly, but MMOs in general do try to keep characters around.

FFXI stopped deleting old characters quite a few years ago. They only did this for the first 2 or 3 years the game was out, until they realized how bad of an idea it is.
