Could the whole telling for FFXIV:ARR be just our character viewing their past memories? Unless I am forgetting, there is nothing stoping our character from using The Echo to look into our own past.

If this is true, could it be that the game is actually taking place in some distant future as our characters are looking back at their lives? I would like to hear other's views on this theory.
