    From what I understand most crafted sets are slightly better than DL without using any materia and obviously become far better once melded with upto 5 materia.

    You're obviously talking about Militia / Imperial Operative gear. While the best crafted is Vanya / Gryphonskin / Darksteel / Astral...which is a tier above.
