On a less dramatic note, I wonder if there's ever a relic +2, maybe some two star recipes and dare I say tier IV materia could play a role in it.

    2.1 and 2.2, I long for ye...

Much of this sounds to me as if the the Producer considers the true purpose of crafting is to make a more exciting game for adventurers. It sounds as crafting is secondary to fighting (becoming "more powerful").

Since all of us pay the same subscription fee per month, it saddens me to think that one group of subscribers (those who garner enjoyment from the creation classes) is basically considered subservient to the "real" players (those whose primary focus is killing things).

You pick a DoW/M when creating a char and you cannot finish the main story with DoH/L, so… yeah, kinda.
And "real" players bring you mats, some at least.

Heh yes, that saddened me, too. If it were up to me, one could start the game as any class they wanted and not be gated out of the creation classes. Why not be able to start as a crafter who gets (reluctantly) sucked into fighting? Why not have a way to experience the main story as a pure crafter/gatherer?

But those are issues for a different thread .

You mean like in 1.0, where you could choose between killing the enemy or discuss with him (parley mini-game)?

Yoshida, can you bring crafted ilevel 80 gear ingame, that would be with materia like ilevel 85 gear? It would be still weaker than ilevel90 gear

Other than crafting things to help further crafting... crafting items, weapons, clothes, food and other consumables is all for DoW/M progression. Of course it is secondary.

While I understand what you are saying, and I personally also spend at least 80% of my somewhat limited time crafting, the fact of the matter is that this is a combat focused MMO, as most triple A MMOs are. I can only think of one, maybe two (Haven and Hearth and Minecraft) MMOs that are fully crafting based. Yoshi-P has never billed it as anything else (though Tanaka did back in the day). I consider myself quite fortunate that crafting is as interesting and in depth as it is.

I would say the situation is less like being second class citizens, and more like coming to an amusement park and saying the food is bad. Sure, there's food, but it's just something to do between rides. And let's face it, our food isn't really even that bad - tastes good - just not very filling. Okay, I'm going to let that metaphor die now.

"food" denotes a necessity to ensure that attendees keep enjoying the content of the rides and ensures their attendance to the park. This is not the case with crafting at all (Culinarian maybe, the others?). The crafting system is going to suffer that fate of being put by the wayside as the game progresses and the in demand items get further and further away(Like almost every other mmo to date) while everyone and their mother demand the whole game is crammed into dungeons.

I honestly see Blacksmiths getting the worst of it, as Weapons are a common dungeon award, ensuring that they will always be reduced to obsolete gear.

I find it strange that crafters are hobbled in terms of gameplay progression because of the inability to control economic dishonesty, and the "need to keep demand on the AH low", while there are group selling dungeon and primal clears with impunity! Or is that the true economy of this game?

Kallara, shame on you for dragging out an already stretch metaphor. Also, long time no see.

My original point aside, I don't really have a horse in this race. I spend most of my time crafting, but mostly just for myself, which means I don't really get sucked into the ever shifting tides of the in game market. I level CRP to have abilities to level my WVR to make Vanya for my SCH, level ALC for my Relic book, LTW for Waste Not.... For all the time I put into crafting, I'm still mostly just a dabbler.

That being said, I don't see anywhere in here where Yoshi-P says craftable items won't scale with dungeon items, just that they will always be a step below the best. Plenty of market out there for people who aren't ready for the best yet.

In fact, I see where he says the opposite.

As our first patch has not yet arrived, it may seem as if the current state of items and crafting is static, but rest assured that subsequent patches will introduce higher-item-level gear, along with many new opportunities for crafters.
The class/job level cap will remain at 50 for the time being, meaning that gear (including crafted gear) will play an increasingly important role in character growth in the months to come.
