Actually I dont think final boss is a dps race. The tonberries seem to spawn at intervals of the boss' health, so heavy dps can make the fight more chaotic. I did the fight with 3 players once, I was the only dps, and it was super easy because the tonberries weren't spawning back to back.

Actually, once the big ones spawn around the edges...it is a DPS race. They start moving in on a timer and you die when they reach the center(like how they work in other FF games).
