Having a hard time with my NVIDIA GTX460

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what is going on here.

I am having an issue where the game will randomly boot out usually about 2 minutes after I log in. It complains about something happened with the video that forced me to be kicked out. This usually happens when I log into town or a crowded gate like Ul'Dah and Camp Horizon. So lately I have been logging out in non-crowded areas to make sure it doesn't happen, which has been working for me. I would like however to see if there is something I can do to resolve this issue.

It could be the video card, or this game is not a fan of the GTX series. It did the same thing when I had a GTX 260. And I do not have this problem with any other game I play (WoW, RIFT).

I currently have things setup like this.

    Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
    NVIDIA GTX460
    8GB DDR3
    Dual Core Processor

    For FFXIV setttings.

Depth of Field and Ambient Occlusion is off.
    Anti-aliasing I set very low.
Graphical quality is set standard to high. Put lower on shadow settings.

If there is anything I am not aware of, or if this is an issue with people who have this card also, please let me know.

Thank you for any input you guys give.

WEll, I have a GTx460 as well. I run 16x CSAA, General Draw Quality 8, other qualities set to max, Ambient Occlussion off, Depth of field on. This is on a system with 4mb of ram, but a quad core instead of a dual. I have had some minor glitches here and there, but nothing disruptive. The newest driver set seems to have taken care of most of my minor glitches.

My suggest, get the newest drivers, do a custom / clean install. See if that helps.

EDIT: Turn off any overclocking you might have, too. See if that helps.

I would recommend uninstalling your video drivers, running driversweeper, then installing the latest package from Nvidia.

Other than that, don't really know.

I had an Nvidia 555M that refused to behave. The way my Alienware is configued I can't really disable the Intel HD graphics without crippling my Nvidia.

Assuming you're being kicked out because it lost track of the DirectX...

If you're still being kicked out after doing what Grit suggested you can do a crappy fix. If you have Steam (by Valve) go to you My Games list, choose to add a Non-Valve Game to the list and add FFXIV. Change your FFXIV config to run in full-screen mode and at the window's full resolution. Launch FFXIV from Steam. You'll only be able to shift-tab to web-browse but that's better than nothing.

I would dbl check how hot your card is getting, because they have not optimized for CPU or GPU and overtax both parts.

Get a copy of RealTemp and start the game up. If the first two cores on your CPU are above 80(FFXIV only uses the first two), or your GPU is above 80, they are running way to hot, and you will damage those parts over time.

    Do check the drivers though.

ACtually, 80°C is not too hot for a NVIDIA card, and the 460 is rated for a max of 104°C, not that it is advisable to run it near that, but they can take a lot of heat.

As to the cores being used, that is up to Windows unless affinity is specifically set.
