Leveling is too fast, gear is too easy to get not really necessary (thanks FATEs), crafted gear is pointless, and food is only meaningful at endgame. Also, money is only relevant for materia and housing related things. That's the way it's going to be for a long time but surely not "the end of this game."

I'm watching nearly all of my items--not even 2.1 relevant stuff--halve in price overnight again and again.

I have a ton of characters with a ton of retainers, yet I stopped putting this up for sale completely. I'm sick of checking the retainer, seeing that the retainer sold 7 things yet made a total of 59 gil... The marketboards are pointless at this point, no gil is to be made.

You know what's hilarious about this? Square made the housing prices beyond insane to remove gil from circulation, but instead it has completely killed the economy, with everyone desperately saving money. However, the saving of the money is not for housing at it's current state (price,) it's for future housing (assuming SE gets off it's high horse with the pricing, which might not happen since their plans to reduce prices still leaves the final pricing as still way too drastically high. I see housing like garison in FFXI, nobody uses it so SE pretends it doesn't exist and won't fix it. Same here with housing, they will wait until we are tired of complaining and then introduce personal housing and they will just watch as FC Housing becomes the next garison...)

Odd. Pretty much everything I sell is 5k+ and materia 3 continue to sell for 30k+ for many. Everytthing continues to be a ripoff with even some basic ingredients selling for up to 800 gil for a shark which explained why shark oil sells for an excessive amount.
My server could do with some of your marketplace rot, but not too much

    59 gil~

A legendary visor vendors for far more. I think you need to re-evaluate your entire market-board strategies if what you say is true.

I can't really chime in on the end-game stuff, because I'm not there yet.

As a lvl 39 player on my primary class right now, I can chime in on what I've seen over the last 10-12 days or so.

One thing I noticed was that, upon completing a quest, I could select gear or slect Allaghan pieces that I could sell for money.

For the first 12-15 levels, I would take my gear.

Then, I stumbled onto the market board and I started to notice that all of the gear that I was being offered... was selling for FAR LESS on the market than the amount of Allagan pieces that were being rewarded.

I find it very weird that I can either take 4 silver pieces (2,000 gil)... or, I can take a piece of armor that I can go right to the market board and buy for 350-700 gil (that is without sitting around and waiting for a better deal).

It's kind of the definition of a broken economy. Either take something that is selling for 600 gil... or, take the cash prize of 2000, buy the thing that was selling for 600 gil, and have 1400 left over.

I don't know what the answer to this problem is, but it's something I've noticed. SE's intention was obviously to have stuff sell for the equilivent of the allgan pieces being offered (I don't think they wanted to rip off players who decided to take gear rewards... maybe they did?)... but universally everything is going for FAR less.

To take it a step further... the drops in the dungeons are generally far better than the quest rewards. So really, it's not take 2000 gil and buy a piece of equipment for 600. It's, take the 2000 gil, then run a dungeon 2-3 times and get outfitted in superior gear... and along the way, make a few thousand gil via running the dungeon (after repair costs) AND pick up gear that you can sell/flood the marketplace with, along the way.

Again, I don't know what the solution is (maybe have gear break? I don't know), but it's obviously a problem.

And on top of it alll, you don't even really need to religiously upgrade gear prior to level 35 anyways.

If things at end game are anything like what I've seen on my journey up to lvl 39... I have to agree with the "economy is broken" crowd. It really is.

Then again, if there's no need to buy anything (because superior stuff that never breaks or can be lost is obtained via dungeon runs), is there any real need for an economy? That's another topic for another day I suppose...

During the initial start of the game, 2k could not buy such a thing.

You've already concluded that the item was originally and has always been 600-700gil only. We know that when this game was live the first couple weeks, everything was expensive, right down to all the story gear. Here and there you could buy story pieces cheap as people out leveled them but most of the time, it was much more cost effective to take the story item as these items were more then 2k easily.

Now, 3 months later, those simple items have saturated the market.

Your analysis of the market is not correct.

The economy arises when people are too lazy to do things for themselves or are time constricted. The market appears cause there is a need for it. If everyone did their own crafts and etc, theoretically, everyone would be self sufficient, meaning there would be no need for a market. However, because we see a market running, there is a need for crafts, gears and etc, meaning there is a need for an economy.

To discuss if there is a need for an economy is not logical, when the only way the economy in this game can start to begin with, is when people need it.

In a post awhile ago a sister Miqo'te posted that the major reason for the bad economy was that there was no money sink like there was in the past with melding materia to your equipment. This was because a failed attempt a melding would resort in the destruction of both the item and the materia that were used, which if the process was a success resulted in an item that possibly was better than what would normally be considered better. If what she said was true: then having something like food effects being removed at the start or end of PVP matches or dungeons might help with the economy.

Recently food buffs have been fixed to where they now persist after death. We are still waiting to see if such changes have indeed benefited culinarians.
