Anyone know if not displaying chat prevents the data usage?

If you turn a disabled chat filter back on, all of the past messages will appear in your log, so I think your client receives them regardless.

I started playing on my phones 3g connection and people here seem to be right, i normally experienced between 20-30 mb an hour which is not bad. I had a 6 gig plan which worked out well for me.
