Is there a way to type chat in Japanese?

I am playing on a Japanese server and would like to be able to communicate at least a bit is there a way to copy and paste japanese text into the chat window? i saw some mention of a way to make macros do this but wondered if anyone knows about how to make this happen? it would be a nice feature for us to be able to do this with simple commands or requests to expand the interaction of our communities across language lines. thanks. I am somewhat fluent as i do a lot of work in Japan but was not sure how to do it here from an english setting for the game..

I know this isn't what you're talking about, but you don't mention it one way or the other. Are you aware of the auto-translation function? Start typing a word and hit tab, and a list of possible matches from the auto-translation dictionary will pop up. Select one and hit enter, and it will put the auto-translate phrase in the chat bar. Auto-translated phrases will show in the selected client language for anyone who receives the message. You can tell an AT phrase by the green and red curvy arrows that surround it. It doesn't cover everything, but there are a lot of common phrases and words in there.

You can always copy and paste it into your XIV chat log ^^ open notepad or somethin, abit slow but it works

I installed the Microsoft keyboard language for Japanese on my PC. Once you load the game, switch to JP keyboard.

It has half-width alphanumeric for typing in English, and then you can switch to hiragana, half/full-width katakana, and half/full-width alphanumeric. You can start typing in hiragana, and then press spacebar to pick the correct kanji you want to use.

There's a shortcut way to switch between half-width alphanumeric and hiragana, but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head. Also, there's probably a way to get the default keyboard to JP when you load FFXIV too. Hope that helps!

You won't see the keyboard change like you did in XI but it's there, try ALT+~ to see if that switches input to Japanese, if not the language might be on English so try ALT+SHIFT to switch first and type, if still not godo, try ALT+~ after this. Wish there was a display icon showing the language status.

I'm on English Windows 7 with Japanese IME, and playing FFXIV in Japanese on a US version CE box.

If you have Windows 8, you can use the "Windows Key + Space" in order to switch between keyboard settings. You just need to make sure that you have the Japanese Language added to your list of available Languages (which you can find by pressing the Start key and search for "Language" in the start menu).

thank you all, was busy levelling up my third class..thank you all ...just what i needed to know, yes i do have the Japanese fonts and all loaded, use them for communications with peers in Japan and also for translations i do for other work, just wondered if the game was hard coded to facilitate it in some ways and it sounds like it is. I have been so busy learning the ropes of the play style that i hadn't had time to check it out in detail so i thought to ask here. thanks again.

recently i was wondering why my shortcut to switch to hiragana didn't work anymore (not in FFXIV, but generally), i always pressed CTRL instead of ALT. Thanks.
Now i'm curious, i'll have to try it in the game today. I'v been thinking of trying to play on a japanese server sometimes, but i'm afraid my japanese isn't good enough yet.
