    Launcher Only Displays Black Screen

    EDIT: solved!

The game worked fine for me until exactly 11 pm a few nights ago. I was booted from the server and now I am greeted by a black screen on the launcher and no way to login or play. I've tried some of the scenarios online and we even took it in to a technical support centre where a problem with the graphics card was detected but solved and the game is still not launching anymore.

I'm running the game on Windows 7

ffxiv.com is added to the trusted sites list and I have already tried to reinstall the game, but it's still not working

Windows is entirely up to date and IE has been restored to default settings

Also, unlike the problem many people are having I am NOT getting the SE logo, it just goes straight to black.

I click on the desktop icon, I get this:

    And then this:

I've already tried restoring default settings on IE. It hasn't worked.

EDIT: tried the .msi file in the link above and it won't even launch properly, it fails midway through.

Uninstall IE 10 and revert to IE9 or try a system restore. Your fortunate to have Windows 7 so you have the option to uninstall and/or reinstall IE10. I had the exact same issue on Windows 8 and had to reinstall Windows from scratch to get it working as IE10 comes native with Win 8.

Here was the post I made on the issue.

Thanks! I'll see if I can figure out how to return it to IE9. Hopefully this works.

It's strange that people are finding this bound to IE10. I have never had this problem with my Win8 laptop. I installed Beta4 roughly a week after unboxing this thing and never had any issues like that because of any IE10 related files/technologies in play. I did go through some issues with crashing to desktop after a forced disconnect once though. What fixed that was simply running chkdsk and letting it fix errors, didn't have to uninstall or patch anything. I initially was afraid it might have been a run of WinUpdates from September that I might have to reverse, but it cleared up after running checkdisk on reboot to find/fix errors.

The first thing I did when I got this thing was lay down security, "disable/remove" IE and Media Player with DISM (never really removes them, and doesn't completely disable them, but at least you can greatly reduce how much they are in play), installed alternatives, and then installed/updated everything (Java and Adobe stuff, .NET, Winupdates--which did install some IE10 critical updates even though it was "disabled" from the catalogue).

Wonder if maybe it's more an issue with a technology normally associated with IE--like .NET, ASP, etc. Might be something to check on---making sure all your .Net and critical Windows Updates are up to date through at least the last week of August or first week of September (haven't checked and run for October yet, waiting until I get a chance to image the system again first).

Welp, restoring to IE9 worked like a charm. There's a couple of other problems with IE, I updated Java to Java 7 update 40 and now it isn't compatible with IE at all. I have no idea why it's such an issue, but apparently IE10 hasn't been tested properly for bugs in Windows 7. It may be resolved in the future, but going for just 5 days without playing sucked pretty bad.

I am glad that fixed your issue and you can go back to playing!

For the record IE10 is OK for the most part. It has been out since 2011 but many web sites still have trouble with it. It seems to be hit or miss and very annoying. /sigh

But I am happy I was able to guide you in the right direction.
