Is there a way to type chat in Japanese?

If you have the Japanese IME should work, Google language also should work (haven't tested after first try on google language)
You won't see the keyboard change like you did in XI but it's there, try ALT+~ to see if that switches input to Japanese, if not the language might be on English so try ALT+SHIFT to switch first and type, if still not godo, try ALT+~ after this. Wish there was a display icon showing the language status.

I'm on English Windows 7 with Japanese IME, and playing FFXIV in Japanese on a US version CE box.

If you have Windows 8, you can use the "Windows Key + Space" in order to switch between keyboard settings. You just need to make sure that you have the Japanese Language added to your list of available Languages (which you can find by pressing the Start key and search for "Language" in the start menu).

argh, ALT+~
recently i was wondering why my shortcut to switch to hiragana didn't work anymore (not in FFXIV, but generally), i always pressed CTRL instead of ALT. Thanks.
Now i'm curious, i'll have to try it in the game today. I'v been thinking of trying to play on a japanese server sometimes, but i'm afraid my japanese isn't good enough yet.
