The nostalgia level here is incredibly high, that's for sure. Although I can't like, every now and then I would get the urge to reinstall FFXI and start up again just thinking about all the story stuff I missed and with Audolin released.

But then I actually start playing and realize "Fuck, I have to worry about getting all the fame I need to get Utsusemi, going from leveling spot to leveling spot, dealing with a shit community focused on leveling as fast as humanly(and inhumanly) possible, farming shit just to be able to afford better gear for hours..." Then I stop playing, cancel the subscription, uninstall the game and realize just how not fun that game could be in its better moments.

Final Fantasy XIV doesn't need any of that. A lot of people here are saying that the game "hands everything to you". A lot of you also put in an ungodly amount of time per day into these games trying to maximize how fast you can exploit game systems to level all the way to 50, thus inducing burnout and "boredom".

It's been 10 years since I started playing FFXI. I'm older now. I barely have the attention span and value my time far too much to play for more than maybe 2 to 3 hours tops, and even when I surpass that, I STILL don't have "everything handed to me", because I'm not looking to speed through stuff anyway. It's a matter of perspective. Someone mentioned earlier that there wasn't enough grouping and socializing in the game. There's plenty of that in dungeons. Earlier today I was on a run where the lancer and I were just shootin' the shit(about FFXI and XIV no less) through the whole run. Great times were had.

For a lot of people(including myself), good dialogue and a good story do a lot to enhance the sense of immersion in a game. Why am I in this dungeon? Why do these kids need these things I'm getting? Sure, say it's to "mask the grind", but again, it's a matter of perspective, and I don't see it as a such, but a lot of you are predisposed to see it as just that, and even see FFXI's group leveling as a grind. I don't see how you can have fun doing something you consider to be a grind. They should probably add even more ways to earn experience and progress through the game(PvP is one such addition I hope), but whatever happened to just enjoying content for enjoyment's sake? Are you actually having fun trying to maximize how much experience you can earn and grind away on whatever that easy thing, even if you're essentially ruining what may be an otherwise good time?
