There could be different level of epic gear. There could be some weaker, less better looking but still cool epic gear that casuals can go after and there can be super hard to get epic gear for the hardcore. Problem solved!Any epic gear or epic weapons should be rediculously hard to get. Final Fantasy is ran by HARDCORE gamers, not casuals. I know I don't want it to happen and I think most of the community agrees with me, that everybody and their brother shouldn't be running around with full HNM gear or relic weapons.
That's way too much like WoW gear style, and last I heard, this isn't WoW. It wouldn't be epic...I mean, yes have some good gear that you can buy, but, have super hard to get Rare/Ex gear. They should just do it like FFXI had their equipment.
Casuals were able to get decent gear, but, only a select group of ppl from the top HNM LSs shine above all others, it gives more appreciation to the gear you get and makes you strive for better gear.
Even if we do get some EPIC armor/weapons and thats a big IF. Its going to look like shit or something simple like an epic wooden spoon of death or Titans spatchula, that are designed in windows paint and the only colour you have is brown.
This is what the game needs to do.
Add good endgame stuff for casual that can be gotten with relatively short amounts of work... similar to the abysea imperian weapons in XI (they take a week or 2 to get)
And make the highest level weapons something that would give the hardcores something to work at for along time. The traditional top weapons in final fantasy. Excalabur, Raganrok ect. (They can take over a year of work to get) THe difference being unlike XI they need to keep relics at the top Dmg and effect wise.
Casual players need to learn their place and buy drops from HNM shells...gtfo!
I liked the trials system, but in true FF style, it was far too much of a grind.
It should work like this:
Weathered Sword - Starter weapon
Lowest stats in the game.
Well used Weathered Sword - Turns into this after 50 TP moves have been used with
a slight stat improvement.
You could then obtain a special repair item once your Gladiator reaches 25 to begin it's upgrade process.
Garnet Hilted Sword - After obtaining a Garnet, and performing a specific weapon repair, the Well Used Weathered Sword becomes this. Slightly better stats again, and another unique model. Maybe a little Garnet in the pommel. Requires at least 200 TP moves completed with the sword.
Imbued Garnet Hilted Sword - Rank 35 Requirement - Sword now does impressive damage, and can be used up to R50 if needed as a comparable weapon, but will not be the BiS for any rank above this - Blacksmithing guild master will offer a quest to go an plunge the blade into a rare Notorious Monster, to imbue it with the blood of the creature. Returning the sword will then allow the guild master to temper it, and award you with this upgrade. 500 TP moves completed with this weapon requirement.
Ceremonial Sword - Rank 45 Requirement - Sword now has all stats removed and does 1 damage per swing. Goldsmithing guild master will offer a quest to take the sword, and place it in the waters of Mor Dhona during a specific moon phase and at midnight. Leave it there for 24 hours and then return to retrieve the blade, bring it back to the goldsmith guild master, who will temper it and award you with this weapon. 1000 TP moves completed with this weapon requirement.
Excalibur - Rank 50 Requirement - Sword will have ultimate stats, on hit effects and unlock a new TP move - Gladiator guild master will offer a quest where you will need to release the souls of the 12 Knight's of the Round, who are located as NM fights in the backs of the farthest reaches of the world, behind R90+ monsters. The NM fights could be around R75 each, and require your friends assistance too, to fight each spirit and end their chains to Eorzea. Returning the blade will allow the Gladiator guild master to send the weapon to the various guilds for final tempering, and then to the Disciples of Magic Guilds for blessing. Quest chain could be over a few days, requiring midnight resets between each pick up and drop off, and culminates in a sweet cutscene where you are granted the sword and a new TP move (Knight's of the Round). 5000 TP moves completed with this weapon requirement.
What do you think?
this also has huge scope for the gathering and crafting classes too, performing similar tasks for the ultimate mining pick, or blacksmithing hammer. TP requirements would of course be crafting requirements instead. (as in requires XX amount of crafted items completed with this item, or XX amount of a certain item gathered with this item)

It's not because WOW has different level of epic gear that no other mmo can do so. Plus you say this is not wow but then go and suggest we do the same as FFXI... this isn't FFXI-2 either last time i checked....
It's not XI-2, but both games are Final Fantasy: Online games which throughout the entire series the games built onto each other and while they wanted to make XIV as different as possible, they ignored the basic premise of "evolving from what worked".
What classifies as "End Game" gear is always going to change as the level cap increase.
I think it would be a good time to introduce AF type gear for each job, but I think they mentioned they were planning on doing this soon anyway.
I don't think the game is ready for ultimate weapons, or even weapons that don't have replacements.
I also hate the idea of "wearing off" a weapon, because SE inevitably makes that weapon's stats horrible and encourages players to play gimped.
The idea of upgraded weapons are also pretty illegitimate, because the items that upgrade them will become so expensive that these weapons are reserved for either the most timespamming in the game independent of effort, or those who invested in the first 8 months of FFXIV by cheating their way to gil generating assets.
The only thing that's left is a stock grind. Points systems. Can't buy em, can't fake em. You just have to keep doing that activity over and over.
We'll have to just see how they decide to evoke rare and great gear in this game. It'll probably break it regardless. Either it adds to the grind count, or it completely destroys the economy by finally expressing everything wrong that's built up in it.
