No I started as a marauder in limsa lominsa and changed to a gld and I know it is dependent on class where you start what city you go to what I am asking is do you get a different intro depending on race?

Race has nothing to do with what city you start with (and hence, what intro you get), starting city (and hence, opening) is solely determined by what class you chose to start as - Limsa always starts you off on a ferry, because it's naturally a maritime state on an isolated island. Ul'dah and Gridania both start on a chocobo carriage.

You'll get the Limsa opening on the ferry if you start the game as either ACN or MRD. You get the Ul'dah opening if you start as GLA, THM or PGL, and the remaining classes (CNJ, LNC and ARC) give you the Gridania opening.

Well I did start as a MRD and I am really sure I got the carriage ride intro but I may be mistaken I will create a new character and watch it again now ^^.
