I really wanted to revisit this dead horse and let the rotting flesh fester a bit longer. I want to talk about why philosophy tokens are completely awful in their current state.
THEY'RE REQUIRED FOR EVERYTHING.
You know, it's a currency, this should be expected. However, the way it's handled is just really not all that good.
-You need tokens for darklight gear, which is understandable. Darklight was some of the best gear in 1.0 if you ignored melds, and it was pretty rare in 1.0 as well. However, why doesn't darklight gear drop from a dungeon as well? Like, not throughout the dungeon, that'd be silly. But the final chests of, say, WP and AK can drop a piece of darklight. Or two, even. And you can split it among the four who entered the dungeon. Kinda like how gear works already, just with slightly better gear, alleviating the grind to an extent. Keep the current prices let us continue purchasing darklight with tokens, but ease it up a bit, SE. Let us get something rewarding from chests.
-You need tokens for materials for Vanya/Gryphonskin/Darksteel gear. And it's like 9 pieces per item. Holy goddamn, why? This is probably the worst way to handle coke/potash/peacock ore/etc. It sucks. Crafters should be able to get these drops from dungeons, or buy them at a fairly high price in hamlets, similarly to 1.0 as well. It seems silly to have such a high requirement per item, it's painful, even.
-Quenching Oil. Why is this a step in the relic quest? It doesn't really have anything to do with you learning your class. You're just grinding one of two monotonous dungeons over and over again after you defeat Titan, who is somewhat of a challenge still. Why not make this a final item drop from one more mob, or something less tedious and more skill-oriented than "speed run preatorium/Amdapor for 3-5 hours"?
Honestly, I really like this game. A lot. I really enjoy the encounters in Coil and I love the titan fight and everything. But the steps to getting there are dreadful, I'm starting to feel the burn. I can somewhat sympathize with people who are quitting because of farming these dungeons. It's exhausting. Just a few changes to how philosophy tokens are handled now and in the future, and I'd be happy.
