A Warrior Looking for Advice - Ifrit Hard

Hey! My main is actually WHM, but I'm gearing up WAR as an off tank for friends n' FC.

I really embarrassed myself in an Ifrit Hard run earlier. The party was extremely patient with me, as it was my first time off tanking anything challenging, and also my first time being the stun.

I felt like I was completely missing something, though. The Paladin was main tanking Ifrit, and I took up position behind Ifrit (of course!), and was told to simply do nothing but Stun (Brutal Swing).

Except...as far as I can tell, I only have one Stun ability (Brutal Swing) available to me and it has a 30 Second recast timer on it, which Skill Speed seems to have absolutely no impact on. If I stun once, Ifrit can and does cast Eruption multiple times again in the span of the recast wait.

So. What am I missing? People were continually telling me to Stun. Is there a secondary stun ability I'm missing? I have all my jobs to 50 from Legacy, but I can't seem to find a shared Stun skill between the other classes (Warrior being limited to Pugilist and Gladiator skills).

Am I really supposed to stand there, with auto-attack on and not DPS between Brutal Swings cool down?

Any tips or suggestions would be great! I'm really eager to get my Ifrit Axe, and I don't want to be a drag on a group!

This was not your fault at all, your party was at fault.
In this situation, you shouldve been m-tanking instead of the paladin.
The paladin shouldve popped sword oath and stunned ifrit with shield bash (2,5 sec GCD)

Thanks for the replies. That makes me feel a little less foolish. I got volunteered for stunning right away, and nobody batted an eye so I assumed it was normal.

Like I said, I main WHM. I don't think I ever actually paid attention to who was in charge of stuns on those runs, just running away from the Eruptions that everyone seemed to miss the stun on anyway.

I'm going to get some sturdier gear, and go in expecting to main tank next time! Thanks!

    Wait...

Why did your party place you as stunbot?

    And you had a Paladin?

    What in the actual fuck.

If any party ever tells you to stunbot tell them no. As a war you can MT all of the primals though Titan HM gets a little nasty and you'll find yourself more use as the off-tank for Garuda but I've done all three as both.

    People are stupid not you.

    Few problems here.

One: War stun has long cooldown so that is bad.
Two: For Pld to be able to stun when they need they have to be very careful with their threat rotation which is going to be less enmity in most cases... BAD

Three: You don't need stuns to complete Ifrit. You need to not stand in stuff. Even with someone stunning there is a good chance one will get through at some point. Lag, mistake by the stunner, and just being immune from to many stuns are all totally possible and can be avoided if you don't stand in bad stuff. In all honesty if you cannot complete Ifrit because you need stuns then you will probably fail big time on garuda/titan because you can't stun them out of their stuff.

I main tanked HM Ifrit as a WAR, with a 55 wep, AF gear and trinkets in the 45-49 levels.....it's very doable, just know how to self-heal and hold aggro... Do that, and if your team wipes 9 times out of 10 it's not your fault...

don't let any pseudo-elite baddie tell you otherwise.

It's also do-able with two wars as tanks. I was the off-tank while the other war mt. We rotated stuns and it worked out very well. FYI you're team is retarded for voting you as stunner when there is a pld in the group. That being said I was in a DF group where the pld tanked and stunned. Mad respect for that, of course I wasn't trying to steal his hate.

It's actually really easy to stun and MT at the same time. It doesn't impact your threat enough to really matter, as long as the OT isn't spamming max threat combos all fight.
