Ifrit or Emerald Carbuncle?

Hi guys, I just obtained the summoner job today, and Summon III with it. I was just wondering if Summon III is a better choice over Emerald Carbuncle. Ifrit is a melee summon, so I thought it might make more sense to use a caster summon with a knockback ability... unless they have different stats?

Don't bother with ifrit he sucks hands down.

When solo I would always use the tank pet (Carby or Titan) + Attacker Chocobo = Destroy things

I see, neat. I had heard things about Ifirit (mostly bad things) so I wanted to make sure I didn't get attached to him before I figured out the most efficient way of playing this class. I'm still learning :x

As Hysterior said, that's how I play my ACN and Topaz Carby alone does very well, plus DD Choco you dont even need to worry about hitting something, they do the job pretty fast

Emerald carbuncle also gets its version of contagion (I think its called like Emerald Shine or something, idk), which instantly makes him(her?) infinitely better than ifrit, until you get Garuda.

You can do a simple comparison: Using the same skills, set a timer killing a mob with carb and another with ifrit. When i did it carb took 26 sec, and ifrit 25. But do it on your own and watch it yourself!

Ifrit's auto-attacks -should- elevate his DPS above that of Carbuncle or Garuda because they have similar damage on their abilities and the caster pets do not auto-attack. His main ability is also instant, whereas Carby and Garuda's has a small cast time. If you can't keep him alive, though, he'll contribute far less and he doesn't have Contagion so those are two big problems with using Ifrit.

You can probably ignore Ifrit all together and not really suffer, as the differences between the two types of pets should be pretty minor damage-wise.

contagion is nice, but ifrit AoE attack have a short CD, allowing him to be quite nice on pack.
