Lady of the Vortex cut-scene crash

I've looked all over for someone else having this problem and I haven't seen anything addressing it. I have gotten to the point in the main story questline where I'm trying to start the Lady of the Vortex quest. I talk to Cid, accept the quest, get the loading screen for a cut-scene... and then everything stops. The loading animation in the bottom right corner continues to spin, but there is no music and the screen is black. After about a minute or two i get a message saying that there was an "unexpected error" and the game crashes. Nothing else in the game seems to be giving me any problems, but this is the main story! I can't really continue and I'm not going to pay for a subscription when it is not working properly. Please help!

I'm playing on the PC (laptop). I've tried both Standard and High quality with no success.
Cable internet.
