If you haven't already done so, do your storyline quests in Ul'dah. You should have Court in the Sands (http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/quest.html?ffxivquest=110010) Immediately.

After that is complete, when you hit rank 8 you can do Golden Sacrifices (http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/quest.html?ffxivquest=110010). In all honestly, between exploring, killing random mobs, and a few guildleves (available @ the Adventurer's guild) it shouldn't take you too long to hit rank 8.

This will start you off with a little bit of "seed money" so you can experiment with some a couple of other classes. Tip: if you're interested in doing a craft or gathering class, you do not need to get the secondary tool right away if it's a bank-breaker.
