should i be in a JP server if i'm in aussie (latency)?

    topic.

i get bad latency (even story mode titan is a bitch to do for me, along with ram's and dragon's voice from chimera), and my internet is not slow. i play on Ridill, a JP legacybserver. some of my fc mates who play from NA have lesser latency issues than I do.

sometimes I wonder if plahing on the JP server was a wrong choice in the first place. Would playing on an EU or NA server be better?

I quit Ixion because I started getting horrible lag after the big maintenance they did a few weeks ago. It became unplayable. So I started over on one of the new NA servers they'd just created. Which has been good. You could look into a server transfer once they start.

In theory it shouldn't matter, but I did notice a difference.

I'm also Australian and play on Ridill too just fine (it was my server in 1.0 when all we had was JP servers), and I have no real problems with latency now - most of my lag issues usually stem from either a slow internet connection (lets face it, Australia's internet infrastructure is cringeworthy) or a slow computer which can't handle a large amount of characters on screen at once.

Really, and this is what most people find hard to understand, is that the game is simply being overloaded with connections as it is just too popular. No network can handle an infinite amount of people connecting at once, there has to be a limit. And unfortunately FFXIV hit that limit. It's unfortunate, but it's life I guess.

It all depends on routing. I've seen cases where some AUS ISPs route their stuff to Los Angeles then back to Japan rather than just having a direct route to Japan. (which the latter should help a lot with latency considering the distance)

If you fall into this category, I think you're pretty much going to have the same results whether you play on a JP or NA server as LA to Montreal is pretty close in distance from LA to Tokyo.

What do the connection descriptions say on the world selection screen? I'm on the US East Coast and mine say "Excellent" for NA/EU and "good" for JP servers. Does your screen indicate a better connection one way or the other?

    o.o

I just checked, apparently NA servers = excellent and JP servers = Good.

Does that mean mine is actually somehow routed to NA before coming back to JP?

edit: I checked again and they are both Excellent now lol >.>

edit2: i also checked the ping. NA ping is around 300ms, EU ping is around 350ms and JP ping is around 190ms. geographically they seem accurate, so it means my 'latency' is most likely due to having just too many players around?

I started on a US server but the lag and gold spam was terrible so i tried a Jap server and get a better ping and a fraction of the gold spam.

If you do some research you can find the Ip addresses of the servers and do a ping test. My ping was better to the Jap server by over 20%.
