I think a lot of the people who don't think they're addicts, would qualify as one according to official criteria, and those who do, in typical addict fashion, are in denial and don't want to do anything about it, and just make excuses as to why it's 'ok for them'. I commend the OP on his initiative, but it's like telling people to stop smoking. No one is going to do it until they're ready, regardless of how much they're hurting themselves and those around them by their behavior.

People with addictive personalities are susceptible to any form of entertainment or substance that one finds enjoyable, you can't really peg it to just video games. If it's not one thing it would probably be another. Also while your OP may have been well intentioned it does come off as telling people how to live their lives. If they prioritize gaming above all else and they truly enjoy it but can still function as productive members of society, who are you to say whether or not they should or should not be outside during their free time? I understand that people with full blown addictions cannot function in society but at that point you can't just tell them to go outside.

I feel most people here are big boys and girls and can handle their own lives and free time. Your OP comes off as telling people what to do and that's why some people get defensive. Your posts since have progressively grown more trollish though.

As far as gaming goes, I am an addict, for whatever reason I use gaming to escape whatever issues I have that I don't want to deal with. It is hard for me to go a long time without gaming, but it is significantly easier to stop as apposed to drugs/liquor/nicotine as there is no physical withdrawl symptoms. To say that gaming can't be an addiction is to say that gambling can't be an addiction. Just because there is not enough evidence due to lack of research does not mean that it can't be an actual problem.

Ravani it's cute how you think you're intelligent, but really you're not :P
For someone knows the pain of losing people to addiction, I wouldn't expect you to be using the name of an alcoholic drink in their name. I hear that stuff's pretty addictive. You must be all torn up.

Also, patronising people is only making you look like more of a douche on this self-righteous post of yours. I love that now you've come out saying you're addicted to gaming whilst previously going "You live in xxx?! If I lived there I'd never do xxx!" That in itself is weak justification for a habit.

Who's the one lacking intelligence now?

And for those who have some kind of disorder, I was diagnosed with severe mental illness at age 21, and I've overcome it completely, and I can tell you the longer you make excuses for yourself, the longer you'll stay stuck in your situation. You can't undo your illness, whatever it is, but you can live life to the fullest no matter what your situation. And spending 12 hours a day on FFXIV is letting your life waste away, trust me in that. Cudos OP.

I guess my point is there is no official, what one person may call an addict others may not. So what makes it official? Someone who went to college and has a piece of paper with PH. D. on it?

I'll admit that it's kind of creepy being called an addict, but you may be correct.

To the people requesting that this thread be locked: I personally think that MMO addiction is a relevant topic and that an MMO forum is the perfect place to discuss it.
