I'm gonna say no to this idea. If the enviroments were more interesting to explore then not having a map would be fine. They are not however, they are bland and boring and i want to get to where i need to be ASAP, so i need a map. Getting lost in the black shroud without a map? God, no. I would want to kill myself.

    Gotta say my piece.

A progressively filling out map would be a fun touch. More incentive and desire to wonder around, even in areas with level 90 dragons free roaming.

The easier way for this to be done from what I can tell would be to connect areas on the map to the regions in game. In the game they are already segmented around camps and gates. If someone finds the camp/gate in the area, they get a map. Straight forward, and outside of the current dungeons finding new camps or gates without outside help would be an adventure.

This is a really good idea. Though there is much more to it I believe, but I wouldn't mind this at all.

Agree with OP, i'd like to have maps covered brfore exploring them. But not buyable. Only when you actually explore every square, the map will draw itself a part of it.

And the possibility to make marks (with text) on it like ff11.

I don't think it adds enough adventure to justify the painful, inevitable fetch questing or spawn the demand for a third party application.
And that's basically what everyone did in FFXI.. so I think it's actually better to have them already in game, prevents hassle and third-party program usage they so much loathe at SE..

Anyways, generally speaking.. would you travel the world without roadmaps..? If you want to get lost then go ahead..
Adventure..? I don't recall the characters from the lord of the rings questing their maps through middle earth.. and there was adventure..

There was no challenge getting from one starter city to the others for the first time. Requiring the map to be purchased/quested/explored would hardly sacrifice casual-friendly play, but would rather give the casuals the opportunity to feel a sense of accomplishment when the finally reach Ul'dah and buy a map of Thanalan.
I don't know, I kinda wanted to gouge my eyes out during the ride from Thanalan to Limsa Lominsa since I wasn't fishing. That was sort of a challenge.

I agree with the first post though, as long as it's only dungeons and "unexplored areas" of the world...if people connected to the known cities have already been in places for a while, it's likely that they've already made maps so us beginning with a world map already makes since. But if it's a "newly explored dungeon" or a "new frontier" then why not have the players explore? And how about we be able to make maps as well? R20 Carpenter recipe -> creates wood mulch, R25 Alchemist recipe -> creates paper, then a recipe for ink, put the two together (not sure which class would do it) and you make a Map of one of the areas you've explored...and then we get another slot in our inventory for "Maps." And then players can also sell the maps to other players who haven't explored yet.

    Disagree......

It's pretty much a staple of MMORPGs nowadays to give you a map. It saves time and effort, and let's you see ahead. It's a pain to have to draw one out yourself.

Besides, all I have to do is google it to see the map. I just lose the feature of being able to see myself on the map, which is kind of nice.

    This.

No stupid quests or hunting down keys for chests. Just simple map drawing of you explore square X,Y you can see that square on the map. You'd have all the worthwhile areas rather quickly but it would provide a sense of adventure to new players, which is what SE is targeting right now. The three cities are linked by roads so it's not like they'd get lost.

Personally I like already having the map. What they need to do is just add more random treasure chests and boss battles/quests, or puzzles to dungeons. Even if you already have the map, you still would have no idea whats in certain corners of the map. And as always, there are still a few "off map" areas strewn around.

Besides if not, people would just hit the latest wiki or guide site, and look at the map from there.
