(Incidentally, in Rift there is every reason to explore, including artifacts and puzzles hidden away in the mountains that give shiny rewards and achievements. But that's all icing on the exploration cake and not necessary.)

Actually.. no there was no reason to explore because all that was mapped out and displayed for public view. Don't tell me that you found all the puzzles and artifacts yourself.. you know you looked online too. The sense of exploration was an illusion and only maintained while you kept yourself in the dark about what was in the game.
