What's wrong with covering your gear?I honestly hate the idea of vanity slots simply because I fear people will use it to mask their real gear more than they use it just for looks. Hopefully there will be a client side option to not display vanity gear so that you can tell at a glance what someone is really wearing.
The only gear I have problems with are the ones that are seriously poorly designed. I'm not saying I don't think some of them look cool, mind you, I'm just arguing the practicality of some of the suits of armor. The one that stands out the most to me is the female Dragoon AF. Let's be honest: if you're supposed to be getting right up in a monsters face and--tanking them or not--it's probably smart to cover up all of those soft, fleshy parts of your body such as, oh, I'unno, your abdomen? The armor looks cool, just horribly impractical.
I find it absolutely hysterical that every MMO that gets released can't do something that Lord of the Rings Online conceptually did a lllooooonnnnggg time ago.
Step 1. Add a tab to the "paper doll" armor slots
Step 2. Allow any item that fits that slot be allowed into the slots on said tab. (Wanna be a mage in plate? Why the hell not, you go right ahead! Tank in leather? Rock on brother/sister.)
Step 3. Show that item on the character, regardless of the item actually equipped.
Done. Seriously, this is not rocket science.
Nice thread OP.... Something that made me really laugh today. I needed that ....
Thanks,

I sympathize, OP. My character looks pretty silly too with her fancy bliaud and . . . panties. Almost makes me wish I'd stayed male, at least they get shorts!
IMHO the gear design in this game is great, for the most part, but not every style will be liked by everyone so there is bound to be dissatisfaction about gear looks when there is no vanity system and so many styles cannot even be dyed.
Its just brutal to hit max level, think "now to get to the good looking gear!", and realize your level 20 robes were a MASSIVE improvement aesthetically over your class defining gear!
Most of my life as a Thaumaturge I felt like I was fighting in some kind of sleeping robe with clown shoes on and oh yah~ lets not forget the dunce hat, and I had to live with this as I saw cooler heavy armor characters run about through the different levels. The pain will never be forgotten. I actually grinded Brayflox over 100 times just for the Battlemage set, and by the time I was level 48~ish that was when I finally attained the coolest part the "Battlemage Robe", which I no longer needed at 50 with the Black Mage AF armor, which I now replaced with my Dark Light Robes. But jeebus why do robe characters have to look so clowny and uncool?

Are you an internet e-thug?
I laugh cause you fake. CX
Wow, its looks like someone tried to cross a rabbit with a Dyson vacuum cleaner...
Well one thing that has been suggested a lot in these forums and has been getting decent backing is a "Toggle Off" option for vanity gear. A button similar to Hide Head Piece that disables vanity gear from your PC's perspective (You see everyone's normal gear on your PC, they see everyone's Vanity gear on their PCs).
It would address both those who oppose vanity systems and those who like it toggled off for situational moments (PvP, running DF with a person whose costume is an eyesore, etc) without forcing restrictions on the general population.
Petition to lift the silly dye restrictions:

Just say NO to vanity slot restrictions:
