Technically any time put into a game is wasted time. No one gains anything from it but entertainment.

With most people that's true. However there are a few special people who the muse speaks to through myth, art, movies, and yes even video games... which allows 'participation mystique'. All it takes is one such special person to make the game more than just a game. I am such a person.
