Did world transfers go live? It's October.

I played in 1.0, but I would like to be on a NA server. My friends were able to transfer to an NA server beforehand.

It seems the process is unavailable now? Even if I have to pay for what they received for free, I'd really like to start playing the game again It's no fun without my friends.

Did I miss something or can we still not transfer from Japan --> US ?

I think the transfers were open temporarily for 1.0 players and then closed down during the beginning of the game (early access?). Though in 2.1, I think I read that they will be putting it back in permanently with 5 days for free and being charged for it after that.

I believe that's how my friends transferred. Hopefully they provide those 5 free days, but I'll pay for it if I have to. At least I can enjoy all the solo/gathering/crafting content meanwhile.

Actually, server transfers will be starting somewhere around the middle of this month. Keep an eye on the dev tracker, there was a huge post about it.

There were previously transfers for 1.0 characters because servers were being split between JP and NA/EU regions and they wanted players to be able to pick what region they wanted to play on. My server, for example, became a JP region server so in order to accommodate our mostly-US players we moved to a NA/EU server.

You could always transfer between JP and US servers. The only restriction is that Legacy servers cannot initially transfer to Non-legacy servers.
