    Wasted/Lost EXP from story line?!

I took my time through the game, did fates quests etc. I just hit 50 last night, but I still have quite a bit of storyline to go, we just passed garuda. Problem now is that all my story line quests give 12k+ exp, but I have no option but to let it go to waste since I don't have another character level 44+

I should be able to convert it to merit points, bank it for another job, or gold or even letting it built toward 51, anything is better than just clicking "complete" and saying goodbye to 12k exp!! sucks.

Strange. I did all the quests in every zone and only hit 50 before the first major story instance.

How many fates did you participate in?

I tried to complete all my story quests and class hunting logs before I hit 50 because I knew this would happen lol.

I did all the quests in every area too. (this was probably a mistake, but I like being level capped for quests, rather than the min level) As far as fates go.. I never just sat and camped them, or ran around looking for them if I ran across one I'd do it. I exp partied, or soloed maybe 3 levels above level 20. I just got the achievement for 50k seals, and that's with doing 2 company logs so that should give you some idea of how many fates. I've done Savra maybe 8 times?

I had this problem before I could even change classes. My solution was to not touch the storyline quests till I could change classes and start into crafting and gathering classes so I could put that exp somewhere. Let me tell you, though, that after a point the quests alone stop giving you the exp to get to the next level. I've been having to supplement with leves if I want to use that quest exp (who thought it a good idea to not let Land or Hand benefit from Fates?).

Boy, you're right. That is a terrible waste. If only you had not been so short sighted in the first place yea?

Here's my PSA concerning this problem.

    Fates Pros
    Fates are easy
    Fates are fast
Fates award a lot of XP
Fates award a lot of GC certs

    Fate CONS
Fates dont drop gear (except a few of the max level ones and even the gear here is replaced by level 45 gear)
    Fates give almost no Gil
    Fates teach nothing

You are playing a game with tiered endgame raid style content. If you make it to level 50 off of only fates you might as well go back and do it again because you are an infant in terms of understanding you class compared to someone who used dungeon finder. I'm not trying to say don't use fates. They can be fun time to time and is a nice xp and cert boost at times. It certainly was never meant to be used as a way to develop your character.

Maybe they should bring back the Surplus Points systems from 1.0, fatigue and all

More on topic, it's only a % or two of a level and don't worry by the time you have another job in that range you will get exp very fast, especially with the second job bonus.

(note: they really shouldn't bring back the Surplus Points system)

You could be on the opposite side of the coin like me. I have to grid the crap out of fates in order to accept the next story quest. It requires level 38, and my PLD is about 37.2. All unlocked hunt logs are done, and I have to do Halatali to finish my initial GC hunt log. Doing off-story quests will likely take longer than grinding FATEs at this point in the story.

All this because I stuck to the story once I hit Drybone, so my other classes would have something to do later...

I assume "Surplus Point" was like merit points in FFXI? where you earned points you could turn in for stat boosts? This didn't come along for many years in FFXI though... guess I just have to suck it up.

No disrespect but you kind of brought it on yourself. I know you said in a follow-up comment that you wanted to be above the minimum level for story quests but burning to 50 wasn't really required to be able to comfortably do the story.
