I don't think they realized that until after Forked Tower flopped and the number of subscribers was cut in half.

The game isn't stable enough to play anyways so I am not surprised.

"Don't you guys have phones?"
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

These people really complaining about an MMORPG being grindy ICANT
This came out as a huge red flag to me. They’ve shown with Dawntrail and 16 that they don’t really know what to do going forward. Only a small niche likes these entries, and from everything I’ve heard, he’s now into mobile stuff?
I’m tempted to just replay the whole MSQ, and be ready for when it all falls apart.
My gut is giving me“it was a good run” vibes.
Mobile game exists already in CN and has for almost 6 months now I believe? It's mainly ran by Tencent with SE having some supervision over it (so they're involved but not deeply involved to the point of handling its actual development). I've played it for a bit on and off and there are definitely cosmetics in there that would upset anyone in PC for not having them (multiple long hairstyles for example). Bad news is that all of them are tied to real money and you'll be forced to spend something if you want to use the market board at all (it's their way of separating F2P from "subscribers", same as how we have it now). Lootboxes for cosmetics are also still going strong while people who aren't interested in engaging in those systems basically get nothing outside of a random basic outfit here and there from an event. This came out as a huge red flag to me. So yeah, call it FF14 with more pressure to pay to look pretty.

I don't think you realize how much that might actually be SE's direction going forward, with so much of the population based on looking good rather than any degree of remote competence.Mobile game exists already in CN and has for almost 6 months now I believe? Nothing about this statement is ominous to me and I'm very happy to see Yoshi P acknowledging that the game needs to modernize. Lots of change is needed for FFXIV if it is gonna remain successful for another 10 years.

The game doesn't need to modernize, it needs to improve. Modernity sucks.
Much of the improvement needed involves looking to the past and remembering what made this MMO and others great in the first place.
Bring back 6.0 Dragoon.
