Please separate the items and make both the shorts and the bikini bottom available to both male and female characters!
Technically the item isn't genderlocked. It's a single item. It's the appearance that changes depending on whether the character is male or female.

What we also need is for appearances to stop being genderlocked.

The opposite is also true. As you say it's just fashion.

The problem is SE rarely bothers with that opposite because they're still obsessed with looking at females in bikinis.

I want to voice the opposite opinion. If they only have resources to make 1 model of each (which tends to be the case in events, nothing wrong with that), I'd rather they don't make both sets identical, for that means the set will look masculine. The majority of sets are already masculine looking; females have more trousers to choose from than anything else. So I for one enjoy the differences in some glamour sets!

the point is that it should be different gear in the inventory slot so you don't have to "choose" between the two and actually wear both, and since they are already two different models shows that there's nothing stopping them from making them two separate items rather then...well...they making it two separate items.

It's a pointless technicality to make. Functionally the character's gender dictates whether you can equip "the shorts" or "the bikini" whether it's one item or two truly genderlocked ones.

With SE, I'd say it's more likely that they would make items unisex rather than add both in the future. Things "should be" one way, but aren't. That's FFXIV right now.

Some other options -- a one-piece suit, something with a swim-top more like the miqo'te hempen chamise, whatever... -- would make for a bit of welcome variety.
There has been a decent variety of swimsuit added to this game, seemingly less so for males. People like to hyper focus on the bikini specifically on these forums, for some reason.

My character aesthetic is quite the variety. I make and have themed outfits, but I also will wear summer or swimsuit outfits, casual, etc.. I like fashion in general.

I will say that for a game where fashion isn't totally its focus, XIV does a great job on so far. Sure, there are hiccups along the way, but I haven't played a MMO aside from Mabinogi/Vindictus (which has become way more of an ecchi NSFW fest, devs are selling literal visuals for exposed nipples..) I'd love for SE to keep adding a lot more fashion diversity into the game. They literally have the world in their disposal here for ideas lol
Fashion should be more of a focus - hairstyles included. It's unfortunate it isn't.

SE rarely bothers with the opposite because people irl rarely wear the opposite, as the picture clearly demonstrates.

    They should be, yes.

I'll never understand it seeing as they are seemingly trying to clamp down on gender-exclusive items, yet elect to continue the trend by having gender specific, I don't really see the issue with having them as separate items for both genders from the initial release.

The picture is a single instance, you can find a picture to prove whatever point.
I personally never saw anyone at the beach wear pants like the ones in the event. I always see men wear either panties or tight-fitting boxers or large but very short (butt height, I think the longest I've ever seen is mid-tight) boxers.
Shorts for women are less common at the beach than for men, it's true, but coulettes and tight shorts are common enough.
And of course all empirical evidence depends on the location and I can't say I've ever been to a japanese beach.

tl;dr both happen to wear panties at the beach, and the trousers from the event look more like something you'd wear over it on the way home.

EDIT: in any case what people wear irl doesn't really matter, in a videogame where everybody (and regardless of gender too) goes around in subligars, thongs, maid dresses or whatever.

While im by no means "for" genderlocking, or having the sets be completely different for males/females, in this particular situation I just dont care much. While its all well and good to say "just make the sets usable for both sides", it simple wouldnt work. No male version would be using the bikini top, and no female version could just have a completely open chest. As for the pants, eh? Both genders have access to similar looking versions of both. Theres plenty of more bikini-bottom type glams that males can use, and theres enough shorts for females to use, that it just dosent seem worth being bothered to me. If it were a more special looking item, for example the crop top of the street attire, maybe id be more concerned since theres not many good looking crop tops that can be used by any job/race/gender, but outside of some frills the bottoms are pretty generic looking. Cant say I care much this time around.
