You remove the politics out of this and you've just described what it is like to be a child. Children are not given much autonomy or freedom and are constantly forced to wear certain types of clothes against their own will or even personal culture. Any school with a dress code or uniform does exactly what you describe. A Japanese-American can't just come to school in a kimono.
