Hi, Just some questions as a new player to FF XIV Online.

So hi!, Glad to be apart of the community here not that I have much knowledge of what I am doing. Tho I am not new to mmorpgs. Just some newbie questions that I have been wondering around. I understand that the game is currently or was currently being dossed. I guess my first question would be what makes a server legacy When a server becomes legacy does it become perma locked and no longer accessible to player base? Does it have periods where you can register to access it? I ask that with Balmung it being the rp central server or so I hear doesn't allow me to join. I currently not remembering what server I am on tho I think it is the backup rp server for balmung. I think I rp more than i pve or pvp so I was just hoping I am joining the right server and want to be in the right place. -nod.-

Brief history lesson. This game originally launched way back in 2010. The launch version of the game wasnt well recieved. They ended up taking the game down, rebuilding it, and relaunched it roughly 4 years ago. So the "legacy" servers are the ones that were around for the first run. Some people came back to the game on re-release, and their characters were still there(legacy characters still started at level 1, but they got a couple special dialogues and cutscenes). Server locks are an attempt to balance the player base somewhat evenly among the servers, and are initiated when the population of a server gets too high. Some are temporary, some are essentially permanent. My guess is Balmung wont unlock any time soon. It has a "reputation" as the "main" RP server, so everyone and their mother tried to get a character on there. As a result, its population is the worst of all the north american servers and they really want some people to transfer off(theyre offering free transfers with benefits - few are taking advantage). Sorry for that. But welcome to the community! Feel free to come back with any questions you may have, and happy hunting.

    Welcome Purplebleu to Eorzea!

Balmung is indeed traditionally the unofficial RP server, but as Frizze mentioned, it is now overpopulated and has been locked for both character creation and transfers more or less indefinitely (I transferred to Balmung back in 2014). As a result players have started attempting to set up roleplaying communities on other servers with varying degrees of success, and yes, I have heard there is an RP community on Mateus, although I have no idea how large or active it is. Don't be discouraged though! Even Balmung started small, so given time I'm sure Mateus will grow to have an active RP community.

Not entirely correct - 1.0 players did get to transfer their characters into ARR at the game's start (my own character Enki is one of these), but we had all our exp and levels (and most of our gear and items too) intact, meaning there were a lot of 1.0 players who literally started ARR already at level 50 (the level cap at the time). Not all 1.0 players got the special 'Legacy' opening and story though, only those who had completed the original 1.0 storyline up to a certain point - otherwise we got the normal ARR story instead.

A bonus all 1.0 characters have though is a special 'Legacy mark' on our character's upper back (which is often hidden by gear) that identifies us as being from 1.0. So if you see a character with a strange tattoo on their back, they're a 1.0 player.
