Now wait a minute... can you do this with pretty much any game you have on PS4?
Let's say, for example, I bought Infamous physically, installed it on the PS4 and need the disc to boot the game.
Can I actually do the same thing with Infamous?

No. It only works with FFXIV because the registration for the game is associated with a separate account system (SE Service Account) rather than PSN, and PSN merely has the game launcher.
The "digital" version of FFXIV is just the launcher, since the actual updates are done internally, so naturally, there is 0 reason to need a disc.

I see! That's what I was expecting, because otherwise, Sony sure would've been low profile on that kind of info if it were the case.
Basically, it was just like FFXI back in the PS2 days.
I bought ARR for the PS3 as a physical copy since I love having boxes/inserts.. Then was sad to see no insert. Upgraded to PS4 digital and got heavensward as digital as a result, and so I wouldn't have to wait for it to ship..

Yep this worked. I can play without the disc in now. If you're going to attempt it though, just a fair warning that it has to fully redownload the base game (took me roughly an hour to download it off the psn store) and then you have to wait for it to patch back up to the current patch. It took awhile, but luckily it didnt delete any of my settings (hotbars, ui layout, etc were all still saved and fine.)
Easy fix to go from disc to digital, espesically for FFXIV:
Delete the local data. (Please make sure you have your hotbars and stuff backed up before.)
Download the trial client from the PS4 store, if it's still available. It's not even a trial client, it's literally the real client.
log in, viola. Done.
In addition, when I purchased Destiny's Iron Banner (new expansion), I didn't have the original disc inserted. So that's a work around.
Okay just cause I don't wanna screw things up, on PS4, how do I make sure my hotbars and settings are saved before I go about deleting and reinstalling the game? ><

To be honest, I didnt back them up, and it was a constant worry i had while it was redownloading. But everything was fine. I think its because the system settings are saved seperately from the saved game. Its like how you can delete a game you downloaded from psn, but your save files are still there on your system.
Anyway what I did, just go to the game icon on your ps4 home screen (the one you would click on to launch ffxiv) and delete it from there. don't delete anything else, just that. Then just go into your library, and look for ffxiv in the purchased section of your library. It'll have Realm Reborn but not heavensward, just download it and it'll patch up to heavensward.
However you may still want to find a way to back your settings up. I'm sure it'll be fine, but just because mine didnt get deleted doesnt mean that yours will be safe as well..
