Not really too phsyched about fragmenting the game community again.

Fragmenting's certainly one problem. The other is the preparatory maintenance that they announced for this - a three-to-five-day downtime. I'm concerned that it'll be just for those involved in the move, and kill progress on those invested on those servers.

I've been interested in going EU for awhile but the gil constraints and having a network at gilgamesh have put me off. I don't think lag or latency's ever been anything more than a rare issue for me, maybe i'll notice something on nin's mudras, idk.

I won't. I created a Character on Shiva a few month ago and was quit irritated to see German shouts in the Chatbox.
I am from Germany and still I found it very confusing to see people talk German in the Game. I come from FFXI and I'm not used to see other languages than Japanese and English and I quit can't stand it XD. So no..... not changing.

I've always looked at the servers like this, given how they are currently physically located:
JP servers are for Japanese players & those in Oceania who play on specific servers.
NA servers are for English speaking players worldwide but those in Oceania may choose the JP servers for latency reasons.
EU servers are for French & German speaking players.
That is how *I* looked at it given the JEFD language settings/options available for the game. I never really considered the EU servers to be in English due to them being part of the NA/EU cluster. Obviously others considered it geographically rather than linguistically. The move is welcomed but may cause more problems, we shall see. Any "free transfer" options should be time limited to allow for a longer term comparison.
Heck no: I have a house....and that's it. Unless I get refunded for it there's no way I'm leaving!
It's true that you build up a network of friends on a NA/JP server, but on the other hand to enjoy the game at its fullest - it is best to go to a server where you have the least amount of lag. I do however wonder if EU players are actually ''savage'' material when it comes to endgame content, I never really see or hear anything from eu server groups. On one hand I am glad most can use auto-translate, but on the other hand you can't expect to run Savage with that type of communication. Also to note that there was an option to have the free transfer to an EU server, I do wonder if they apply that additional server as free.
Actually the very game disagrees with you.I've always looked at the servers like this, given how they are currently physically located:

If you check the data center Chaos it saids "for the residents of Europe".

God no. Not even a remote consideration.
