I'd just like say that the Scions of the Seventh Dawn all occupy classes: Thancred - ROG, Y'shtola - CNJ, Yda - PGL, Papalymo - THM, and Urianger - ACN. This extends to the vast majority of NPCs in general--the effects of their abilities greatly exaggerated visibly. Let's be honest, it'd be a lot less enjoyable if Y'shtola just cast player-protect on the Scions and said that it deflected the Imperial bullets, rather than summon a giant bubble to show the players "THIS SPELL BE DEFLECTING BULLETZ!". The same applies for Ilbert, a GLD, who's shown steeping the blade of his sword in flame before attacking versus the incredibly lame, generic spin-slash of the actual Red Lotus Blade attack. If you'd like a handful of other examples, see: https://youtu.be/2XbxPsWFyU8?t=2m2s. As to why Y'shtola never draws her wand, the answer is simple--in 1.0 it was not required, even for offensive spells. It would also look far less "cool", and that's what everything comes down to in these cinematics.
Now, I'm not here to murder all the speculation on what ability was used by Y'shtola toward the end of 2.55, but I highly doubt it has anything to do with the fact that she has a purple tattoo.

On second thought, Y'shtola's attack reminds me of Banish III.
Also, Urianger is an Arcanist - not a Scholar.
He doesn't mind us conducting trials so close to his bazaar, so long as he's properly compensated... Yes, Portus, we pay him in sorcery-blasted bird flesh. - Cocobygo

But wasn't Bard able to cross-class with White Mage in 1.0? I could've sworn we were able to before.

In the fan-fest they touched on the subject and said it was actually a holdover where they had planned to let bards protect in 2.0, but balance made them leave it out. However it was left in to the cinematic and they said to "please just consider it like a limit break, a one time thing done in the heat of the moment" (not exact quote, more a paraphrase of what I remember.)

Scylla was able to cast (un)holy
Thats what I remember thinking while all that was happening. Yda and Y'shtola were just showcasing new limit breaks!I didn't play the Summoner Quests, but she mentioned her sister Y'mhitra who is a Summoner.
Based on Papalymo & Yda's attack which had the sound of LimitBreak, I figured that Y'shtola also used a Summoner's new LimitBreak.
If anyone could explain the relationship between both Y'shtola and Y'mhitra, we might know why Y'shtola was appologizing.
Developers mentioned that each job will probably have thier own LimitBreak. New Summoner LB is like a holy cast? maybe?

new ? Yda's one is already the melee LB3, without the "jumping on you with a punch" part at the begining.
Though she's a pugilist, so that would make sense (MNK will keep the current LB3 in 3.0)
However, Y'shtola is a CNJ with some extra useful spells, thus her LB would be a healing one.

I'm pretty sure that was Red Lotus Blade, a skill also used by Melusine. I'm given to understand it was a Gladiator skill in 1.xx, so maybe it'll become available to Paladins in Heavensward.
