The galerus is a real historical piece of armor that was actually paired with a loincloth. The arm and the tall shoulder guard were the only armor worn and could be used (I guess?) to protect the body and head using that front arm and shoulder.

This armour, if you can even call it that, wasn't designed to take punishment like our tanks are; it was made so that they were unimpaired and could move freely, not to sustain blows. There is a reason their military didn't wear this. The galerus is a real historical piece of armor that was actually paired with a loincloth. Except that in this game, its for MNK, BRD and DRG, not tanks...
And in fact, the gladiator who used the galerus carried a trident (bows and bare-fists were, I would imagine, for people other than gladiators). It is actually pretty remarkable how much interest Japan seems to have in these nerdy details of Western Civilization.

I don't mind some gears looking more masculine nor feminine depending on the gender.
For example, the vanya robe of healing really looks like a dress. Combine the fact that you can't toggle accessories like earings and necklacesnon or off then you'll end up looking like a bad cross dresser.

Oh god that's so so so bad! Sorry but that styling for female armour bothers me so much... The structural integrity of that lady's armour would mean one broadsword stroke across the chest would crack her ribcage. "Boob domes" do the exact opposite of what plate armour is supposed to do. When you have the metal shaped in that way it guides the force between those two domes and forces it on the solar plexus. Dead tank.
I actually really like the idea of plated robes. It isn't realistic but it is a nice cross between function and form where you can use fantasy tropes to hand-wave why it would be awkward (weight distribution would be hell).I'm all for feminine gear or more variety between the two genders. I'm definitely not the type who would want platekinis in FFXIV but i would be open for more skirts or even having plated robes for tanks that would be pretty awesome.
Speaking of feminine clothes, i wonder if this vanity dress will be available in 2.2
