Titan HM: Scholar Guide

After the... endless threads about how weak sch is or how hard titan is for them compared to whm--or even how sch is "underpowered" for titan--I've decided to write this up to help those scholars who want to try their hand at titan but feel a little overwhelmed.

General Approach: You want to always act before the damage as a scholar, this is even more true in titan. Here, the main thing you are trying to stay infront of is stomps. All other attacks either are on the tank, or shouldn't deal any damage anyway. Besides, if you are set up for stomps ahead of time, you will almost by default be helping your hommies survive their mistakes.

So you're going into titan for the first time and you've no idea what to expect. Stop, zone out, go watch videos. Look up a guide else where that will tell you the attack order. Have it up on a second screen, write it down on a notepad, something. Get somewhat familar with the fight and have this order visible. This isn't just true if you are a sch, this is true if you are doing titan period.

Zone in/Respawn:

--Use aetherflow
--Cast summon 1 for eos. Hit "steady." Personally I (ps3 player) keep this on my top hot bar.
--Adlo the tank, the pull itself seems to always get the tank hit pretty hard (its not actually a scary amount, but why risk being that healer that lets the tank go down in the first 10 seconds).
--Shortly before pull, cast succor. You are now ready for the first stomp. Remember, 30 seconds is actually pretty long, but depending on how well you timed this and the pull, you may need to reapply (though damage at this point in the fight is trival, so don't worry too much)

Engage: Phase 1 (Prior to first jump):
Depending on group, you will be farming some amount of limit break (between none and two bars). Just settle in, adeloquim the tank as you feel like it, always succor right after stomp (it will last till the next one).
--Use your charges as you feel necessary, honestly I just energy drain to keep mp up and deal a little more deepz. Just make sure you have access to 1 or more charges by the time he jumps.

Phase 2: Jump 1 -> Heart
--Starting with this jump and hereafter, put down sacred soil where the group stacks up and try to have succor up before he jumps. Recast succor as you are waiting for him to land (the heal will go off after he lands, rebuffing the group while your whm minion does his medica slave work).
--Try to stay centered. Your aoe range is not very big. Personally, I post up about 5-10 feet behind the center of titan and request mele dps to stick to his sides. I usually go several fights without ever getting sands prior to final phase this way.
--As before, precast succor before stomps, recast during stomps. If you notice the shield is down to 5 seconds remaining, go ahead and recast it. Though I'm pretty sure that only happens if he is about to jump, but hey, you wanna precast for that anyway.
--Remember to soil during jumps (not really necessary, but tis good practice and makes you look like you know what's going on).

Heart phase:
There is a music change, this will let you know whats up (asuming no one calls it).
--Cast succor after the jump.
--Adlo the tank.
--Target titan, cleric's stance, bio 2 -> miasma -> bio -> aero. Rock should have spawned, tab target-> bio. Exit cleric's stance.
--Probs some healing on the tank at this piont.
--Dodge sands, look awesome cus you're pro and you havent gotten hit by anything yet.
--Redot titan if bored
--Succor after stomps.

As heart ends, I consider this first set of mountain buster and stomps the most dangerous part of the fight. Your tank is aobut to get wrecked and the group is going to enter a new level of pain.
--Sacred soil in center of ring (should protect group during the astral flow).
--Rouse -> healing bonus -> whispering wind. You can leave eos on auto from here and she will more or less use whispering in time with stomps from here on, but since you're awesome, you're gonna put her back on steady and manage it yourself, cus you're awesome.
--Adlo and heal up tank, get ready for mountain buster. Lustrate if necessary.
--Once tank is above 2.5k OR its been 2 gcd's since the mountain buster, start casting succor (you already had one up right? if not isntant cast it, anyone dieing from here on is with their maker for good, unless their the only bard, in which case... youre gonna try hard). You have enough time from the firs stomp to always cast succor twice (one shield will absorb a stomp, one will rebuff the group). If you've timed it all well, your group will still be in sacred soil at this point.
--MOVE

Phase 3: Happy fun time
You've made it through astral flow and first mountain buster, Titan is stomping you harder than Edward Norton in American History X did that one dude. But you got this, you manually used eos, LIEK A BAWS, you had soil down, you had succor up. Stomps are ending.
--MOVE. Run to an edge away from the others. Always pre-move sands. By the time they rendor you will be a few steps closer to out. Personally, I run out to the edge and then towards the tank (should be an open area since no dps should be near tank).
--Sands is actually a "safe time." Once you have cleared them, you have a few gc'ds beofre anything goes down. Check that eos is on steady. Type in /p how bad the people who got hit by sands are. Cure if you feel like it.
--Bombs, rock, slide, etc: Don't get hit. Win mode.
--As the bomb before the next mountain buster comes in (this one will be followed by sands) place soil on the tank. Personally, when tanking, I do not waste cool downs on this one as there is no follow up damage. So its up to you scholar man. Virus is your friend. I use a target of target macro for this. (/macroicon "Virus" /ac "Virus" <tt>). Always place soil as far in advance as you can on this to make teh cool down friendlier for stomps combo, if you aren't comfortable with this, or low on charges, skip it. Just make sure you adloq the tank before MB.
--Bonus opportunity to look awesome: When anyone is rocked, pan camera so you can see it. As its about to die, get ready to target that character and cleanse them before the whm minion can esua him. Showing how much better you are. Take the gcd time to mock him if you feel up to it. "LOL WHY YOU SO SLOW WHM" works well. Double up on mocking if they are the one rocked and you cleanse them before they cleanse themselves. "HOWS THE VEIW FROM UP THERE ON MY SHOULDERS" is a great one.
--If you are rocked, clear your target (cus you can't target yourself) and spam leeches, you'll be cleansed before you can even move.

You've gone through the first cycle, its about to be moutnain buster -> stomps. Time to shine.
--You've already got succor up, right? Right? Good job. Knew you were awesome.
--Place sacred soil in the center of the arena (tank shouldn't need it, and if you place so tank and dps can hit it, you'll probably mpk someone with sands cus everyone else is no where near as awesome as you are).
--Chain cast succor for duration, getting those shields up as you can.
--Use rouse with every stomp (should always be up). Use whispering as available during stomps.
--Peace out. Sands ALWAYS follow stomps (well, always follow mountain buster, just every other time there is a stomp).
--Check eos health. She may need some love after bombs. Personally I leave her on follow (everyone is in range in this last phase anyway, and it seems to help her take less damage). Sustian is awesome, just like you. Never direct heal her.

That's it. That's the fight. If you have made it through this stomp, you can do it. Just remember, each stomp hereafter hits for one more (up to 10). So you will cast more succors.

--Repeat.
--Win.
--Allow the group to climb down off your god-like shoulders. Stretch out the crick of having carried them all, cus you're a winner.
--Go get omnilex
--Complain to SE that the quill doesn't disappear when summoning cus its ruining your imersion.
--Charge a lot to carry others through the fight.
--Make a thyrus and vendor it

A) SCH can't equip lvl 50 blm gear like dl of casting (THM ACN BLM SMN)
B) Cleric's is -20% healing (as well as stat swap)
C) AK gear is fine if you wear some vit accessories (want around 3.4k in party)

I will probably add a little more about bomb dodging when I feel like it, but each group (I'm told, i've never actually done it without fc) does it different. But with my methods, any sch should be awesome enough to do it regardless of what the others do.

One thing I cannot overstate: Premoving on sands. If at all possible, do this. If a dps is trying to mpk you (or, lets be honest, the whm who is mad jelly of your awesome) with sands, premoving makes dodging even 2-3 stacked sands much easier. And you should always have succor up by defualt when these come in, and that helps alot. (I'm pretty sure you can't get kileld by a single sand if you have succor up and 3.4k hp max).

All of this was really a way to complain about the quill on omnilex without seeming like a total asshat. Had to contribute something to the community.

Killing Titan is fun as a Scholar. I've been killing him more than 15-20times, and it's just so fun to see how useful Scholars are in this fight .-.

I was so happy after I downed Titan, even more so that I was top healer in a pt with two WHM's over 90,000 in heals by par readings between the tank and pt SCH for the WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

thx for this though its not only really funny but its accurate and really helpful to new SCH trying to find their place in that fight (I had to learn the hard way).

SCH is far more powerful then ppl give it credit for, yes WHM is a beast pure healer but dnt count out the contribution a SCH brings to a fight!

We ran 2 Scholars once, and i wiped before the heart by mistake, the geared Scholar could (pretty easily) handle the whole fight alone so its not that big of a deal.. If the whole group knows how to dodge of course :P

I don't think scholars have the raw throughput at the end to avoid wiping on the 8-stomps. Our WHM went down and I *almost* healed through it. If I had maybe 20 more on each succor, I had it.

We were also running a 6 man group with 2 carries....so eh. Either way, Scholars definitely throw down on Titan HM.

Now to find a group that doesn't fail...

The thing about solo healing, and this is true of whm as well as sch, on Titan, is luck plays a role. If you get rocked two to three, or even four times in row, it can be nearly impossible to catch up.

I have solo healed it as whm, I have not had a real opportunity to solo heal as sch, but from carrying on after whm deaths, I can offer a few suggtions:

A) Eos MUST be on manual control. You have to use whispering dawn on stomps and paired with rouse if you want to heal through them alone.
B) You have to be on POINT. You can't let yourself get behind on buffing the group or the tank with shields, you can't mess up your timing on soil for stomps. You also need to be pre-buffed quite a ways incase you get rocked.
C) Lustrate goes from being something you use ocasionally to your best friend.

But you knew both of those, cus you're a scholar, and thus awesome. And of course Eos is on manual right? Cus otherwise, why even.


I'm really glad so many of you have found this helpfull! Please feel free to post questions and suggestions (from more experienced scholars). I've actually only been playing a lot of scholar for a few weeks now, after having finally grown tired of how they gutted my favorite class of all its fun (RIP 1.0 PLD) and how face roll WHM feels. (Don't get me wrong, I made thyrus, I like whm, its just... after the disapointment that is pld, whm still feels disengaged from the fight. And my gripe with pld is that its 3 buttons now, not that its not effective).

The chick in SCH story was right, the more you know and plan ahead, the more powerful sch is. IMO, in this regard, it really is the most rewarding class. Its awful if you try to just be reactionary, its god-like if you are one step ahead.

I have handled healing solo from about 35% - 0% solo as a scholar. As you said, if people can dodge its not hard. If you get to 8 stomps the dps is bad and/or people are dead. You should never get this far into the fight unless you are 3 healing(which you should not be).

For an average gear group, I agree. However, I'd done a 6 man Titan HM with my FC (we carried 2) and me (as SCH) and a WHM healed through the stomp cycle PAST the 8 round stomp.

HP on the party barely budged. It's definitely doable, it's not even hard. You'll need full DL to pull it off though.

My favorite part is ending Titan with a nearly full MP bar while the WHM is completely ravaged. The sustain on SCH is what makes them so good here. We can easily play conservative until we are needed and then just rip off AoEs all day long if necessary.

I was referring to solo healing. With two healers you can sit there forever.

It is more than possible to survive 8 and 9 stomps solo as sch by using eos and pre-casting with sacred soil on the group as i discussed. And, with titan, there are very few "shouldn't be" senarios that apply. The fight is very unforgiving in terms of a single mistep or bit of lag can cause even experienced players to get killed and reduce group dps.

IMO: Saying "you shouldn't ever have to do x" isn't really useful, particularly since the target audience of this guide was scholars who have never gotten a win before. Such progression groups will likely scrape by with a mixture of talent and luck for their first few wins. As such, we ought to give them recomendations for even the least optimistic of situations.

Few new things: If your tank is a warrior, you have to be much more ambitious with your shielding. Even in good gear they get wrecked, so be sure you are keeping adlo up at all times (on a pld you can often just go a little more mp effecient and reactive cure with physik during auto attack segments.)

If you are not solo healing, a sacred soil + two succors is enough for up to 6 stomps -- use this minimalist mode to instead focus cast adlo on a weakened party member to carry them post heart if necessary. Must have solid whm partner for this.

OH! And eos can heal a raised target before you can, so, stick near someone after they've been raised to try to get that half second jump.

There's a very good SCH in my FC who can solo-heal Titan and has solo-healed P5 in a bikini a couple of times, (we win), with 1 - 2 carries in the party. I think if we had a full expert party, she could probably solo-heal the whole thing in a bikini. :D

Because of the way heals operate. In FFXIV, a cure for 600hp to a person with 100% hp will still cure for 600hp and the healer will gain enmity equal to 600hp. I see this becoming a big problem later down the road... but for the time being we're ok.

On this note, Adloquium puts up a shield equal to how much it heals (double for crit) so 600hp to a person with 100% hp will still cure for 600 hp and will receive a 600hp shield (1200hp for crit) on top of their existing hp. In the event this individual has 3000hp and takes a hit for 3500dmg, he will stay alive with 100hp remaining.

I decided to roll a SCH after I was tanking Titan while my friend Solo Healed. Jumping in and out of Cleric Stance like a boss. Only reason anyone would die is if they couldn't dodge.

Just away to do Hydra with SCH so I'll definitely be using this guide soon. Thanks again!

The sad part about this video is that probably 7/8 of those characters have dudes playing them. lol. I don't know what the obsession of dudes rocking female characters is these days.

Not only did I find this IMMENSELY helpful, it was extremely entertaining to read and I can't help but think that you must be awesome as a person.

Titan is scary, a little humor is cool. Keep bawsing like a baws!

Most interesting change in phase 5 I found was handling bombs slightly different than previous phases, since he landslides during the bombs priming (it lands as they start to explode) rather than casting it after they've already started blowing up.

Biggest one is the X bombs, since if you go directly to the safe spot and he aims landslide at you.... well crap. Clock bombs are a bit annoying (aimed at the middle = have to run a bit more before you can stop to prepare for mountain buster) and the line bombs are only really an issue if the 'safe' row lines up with the tank. Standing near a non-safe bomb (preparing the tank for mountain buster while flirting with danger like a boss, of course) and then moving to the safe zone after he starts his landslide makes it go smoother.
