[dev1022] Auto-attack system questions and discussion

I made this thread to probably, maybe, perhaps get some answers from the developers and/or community representatives regarding this upcoming feature, if not immediately, sometime in the future. Discussion is also welcome obviously.

The one question I have is: How do the developers think implementing this feature will benefit the game? In other words, what good would it do to the game to have this feature replace(?) the stamina gauge and manual attack input?

I have two possible scenarios to explain the developers' intent for having this feature (my knowledge is limited however):

1) The players feel that spamming attacks is an issue with the combat system, therefore the auto-attack feature is being planned to address that. However, it makes me wonder why the developers think that making the gameplay less involving would benefit it in the long run? I have seen more than few times that the players feel that they can not communicate well enough with such a 'fast' combat system. Wouldn't it be better to implement other ways to communicate (such as voice chat) instead of making the gameplay less involving instead? Do you think that the huge majority of potential players will approve of this kind of method to increase the communication in-game, when superior alternatives already exist?

2) The development team feels that going towards gameplay more familiar to the majority of MMORPG players would benefit the game. This basically means that basic attacks are automatic while 'spamming' special attacks with their own cooldowns becomes the norm. However, can you say that this is objectively a beneficial change for the game as a whole, taking into account just how massive of a change we are talking about in the end? Will this change make the game better than, say, improving on and polishing the existing stamina gauge and manual input mechanics? More importantly, as the servers are in Japan there will always be more input lag than in other MMORPG's with region-based servers, making our version of the combat system worse from the get-go.

In the end what we need is a polished system that works, but I would like to hear what the people at SE as well as the players have to say about this feature and it's potential beneficial effects for the game. Lastly, I want to say that I initially did not agree with the decision to bring back the 'classic' classes but as I heard from the Producer Yoshida himself how the feature will be implemented, I agreed with his plans. I hope to see the same happen here. If the developers have plans to make the combat system more involving in other ways, then obviously I would agree with the change.

EDIT: I have added most of the (reasonable) arguments for and against this feature below:

For:
1. The current gameplay is not tailored for gamepads, and thus it is harder to efficiently play the game as you need to always go back to the basic attack on the Action Bar. Auto-Attack would help with this as you no longer would have to move your cursor back to the basic attack on the list.

2. Implementing Auto-Attack would help with the lag that is present in the current game.

3. It would be easier to communicate with other players using the text function as the game would require less button input from you.

4. It would only automate the battles only slightly (making them less involving) but the various benefits make it worth it.

5. S-E would have an easier time to control the gameplay with a consistent source of attacks(?).

6. You wouldn't have to spam basic attacks for the majority of gameplay any more, and could instead focus on performing special skills.

Against (based on the above list):
1. With proper UI adjustments, the gameplay can be tailored with gamepads in mind. These adjustments include but are not limited to: Turning the Action Bar into a grid, making it easier to scroll to a skill of your choice at any given time (analog pad can be used with this). In addition, the basic attack would be assigned it's own button in the gamepad. These changes would prove to be an effective solution to the problem presented above, and arguably even with an Auto-Attack feature this change would be beneficial.

2. Lag can be dealt with in other ways, such as actually improving the server hardware and code. Further, there are people who do not consider the implementation of Auto-Attack (from hereon known as AA) an acceptable solution for the problem, for reasons stated later in the list.

3. Better solutions, such as voice chat, exist and can be rather easily implemented to deal with the issue of communication. Voice chat has various advantages over traditional text based forms of communication, such as ability to express yourself faster by speaking rather than typing, having a wider variety of tools to express yourself (as text is very one-dimensional), and while communicating with for example auto-translate is better done with a text based communication method, it does not require as much attention as the system has been made very efficient to use (for example to make long sentences you need to only type few letters and press Tab to get your point across).

4. The solution should not involve automating the battle in any form because it makes the gameplay less involving and thus is not an acceptable solution as long as the game is not too involving as-is. Since there are games (for PC and consoles) that are quite a bit more involving this game should not have it be simplified. Other MMO players, especially those with a PC, will not accept that the gameplay of this MMO has been "simplified" for the console audience, and will see this game as being "inferior" to them in that regard.

5. This is true. Whether it is acceptable that S-E needs to do this for the sake of being able to control their game is another question altogether.

6. This is more of a problem with the fact that the encounters in this game are not challenging enough and do not require you to use more than few basic skills. By implementing AA this fact does not change, if anything you would simply use more skills only because you have nothing else to do. Solving the monster difficulty issue also takes care of the "spamming" issue. Not to mention the class changes, as it is clear that skills are not situational enough.

I definitely find that spamming attacks gets rather boring after a while...it was interesting at the start but later on it gets dull. It might be ok if there were more useful weapon skills or skills in general that may or may not use tp to break up the monotony.

For example on my lancer 60% of the time I am using the normal attack, 30% a weapon skill and 10% some sort of buff/debuff. If they made the normal attack auto then that frees up a lot of time to chat or whatever but then without some more skills that fill out the time frame battle will seem a bit more dull. I just will not know what to do with the extra time after a while but I guess that is why the battle system is being re-hauled.

What wiuld be the best would being avble to toggle auto on and off. I want to be able to talk OR use skills, but cant do both at once, so toggle normal auto-attack

Auto attack ruins the other "attacks" each class gets that you purchase with marks. If they add auto attack I hope they don't do away with the flexibility of things like close shot, heavy shot, far shot, heavy slash, heavy swing etc...

A lot of people don't know they exist, and they think all they have for options is "light attack" which isn't the case. If people started using the other optional "standard attacks" you can purchase with marks, they wouldn't be asking for auto attack.

They are attacks that come at a stamina cost greater than "light swing" but have additional effects like generating more TP for the player, reducing the monsters TP each swing, increasing enmity and hitting multiple targets.

These are "standard attacks" that are not TP moves, so if used correctly should make most of the rants about "all I do is push 1 button anyway" moot.

Go buy your class skills, and start using them.

I agree with this, but 6k guild marks can be hard to get. Especially if you keep missing the day they're offering leves for your class.

Well i hope weapon skills come back from ff11 the curent feel of combat is all over the place , im not sure if auto attack is a good idea or not.
Also i wonder if the upper limit of damage could be more than ff11 where you only did a few hundred points of damage , instead why not make tougher monsters and make the damage(magic and physical dmg) go into thousands.

It would make it feel like you gained something rather than staying in same place.

Well, yes, I don't want to imply that I think the system is perfect as-is. I'd like to, instead, discuss what the developers think about improving the existing system and why implementing a different [auto-attack] system would benefit the game more. Surely, the combat needs work and polish no matter what they decide to do.

A good point was brought up above, which is that the system would lose some of it's potential depth (which does not really work in practice yet) as there are many types of basic attacks in the game. They would need to make us be able to toggle between these basic attack types if they want to implement auto-attack without taking away from the depth of the game itself.

I could see how this would benefit the game, as long as it works on the side of the existing system and complements it. The implementation has to be spot-on for it to not be deemed useless however. Good post nonetheless.

The system needs a rework (as it's getting). Applying auto-attack to the current system doesn't work because the majority of the time you're spamming one attack. Applying it to a system where you use a multitude of different spells and abilities makes far more sense.

We'll have to wait and see what happens with the battle system changes.

If they were to add an auto-attack feature, I would hope that they take enough consideration into making it optional as well as relevant to the FFXIV experience. In an MMO space where EVERYONE is using auto-attack, which as another poster mentioned is essentially just letting the game spam for you, how are you supposed to have any sort of product differentiation? Besides, there is a sizable amount of people who do appreciate the much more active nature of combat.

Seeing as to how they have a stamina bar, I think implementing auto attack would ruin the pace of the battle. Besides having to push a button per attack just feels more interactive if you ask me. I would want them to increase the execution speed of the actions instead of having too wait a couple of seconds before the action is carried out.

I welcome auto-attack. It would give me the opportunity to be more flexible with my abilities. As a tank, I don't like having to keep having to come back to basic attacking when I need to do everything I can to make sure that I keep the enemy in my sights. So having myself auto-attack while I use abilities to keep hate will greatly help me.

You bring a very good point.

Something I could see is that all attacking abilities that cost no point to equip could be used as auto attack.

Let's say you equip them on your bar, but when you select one of those auto-attack moves, the first hit throws in, then other hits follow at a given interval, that is different for the different moves.

If you hit the same auto-attack move again, it turns auto-attack off, which lets you stack ferocity/bloodbath/hawk's eye/ TP move etc.

If you hit another auto-attack move, it kicks in when the previous move's cooldown is done and this is your new auto-attack.

It could be a nice way to combine the current system with an auto-attack, what do you think?

That's a good suggestion.

Myself, I haven't been feeling the need for a mandatory auto-attack feature - making it an available option is all right, but really... combat is hardly that fast-paced. To each their own, though.

I think auto attack could be implemented as on/off feature. I can see myself using like that, on for farm and rank up and off for more strategic battles like NM.

The problem with this idea is that you don't take the stamina bar into account. There's an action cost, but each action uses different amounts of the stamina bar. Certain abilities are also dependent on the use of others, such as flurry only being able to be set off after a successful heavy strike. At least as a pugilist, auto attack wouldn't make sense. In order for auto-attack to work effectively, they'd need to revise a whole slew of abilities and probably do away with the stamina bar/cost idea, which I'm personally not a fan of. That isn't to say that I wouldn't be in favor of it if they were able to come up with a creative solution that doesn't destroy the game for a subset of players.

If you feel the game is spammy just learn how to play your class, don't blame the devs.

I think auto-attack could just be taken out of the stamina system, and readjust the cost of the moves that consume stamina accordingly.
Higher stamina cost of existing base attacks (that would be converted into auto-attack) could translate into higher delay between strikes.

Why do you think it would not work with your pug reflex moves?
I think it gives you even more time to focus on these types of moves. Also, I can throw in a feint even after I have launched a successful attack after having missed as long as my ~3 seconds feint timer is not over

If the #1 slot is converted to an auto attack on/off toggle and these attacks are at no stamina cost say at a set interval or delays are added to weapons i am all for it honestly. it wouldn't "Ruin" guild mark attacks or secondary's it would make them more valuable, they stay at will attacks at the cost of stamina that have nice effects and generate extra tp.

Now mind you i am pro auto attack for melee/mage classes i am very weary of putting archer and any future ranged classes on full auto.

Might as well increase the damage by all abilities, rather than implementing auto attack. Honestly don't see the point in it.

Normal attacks in FFXIV are NOT meant to be spammed, they have different effects like all the other abilities so there's no point in spamming them and there's no point in an auto attack feature.
You absolutely don't have to spam normal attacks on NM, in several occasions you even have to stop dps, so what's the point? you want it so you can chat during guildleves? pretty lame.

Basically if you want an auto attack feature you want a dot and, guess what, you already have plenty of them :O cast poison, dia, bio, drown or whatever you want, so you can keep chatting >.>

I leveled from 1 to 25, as a conjurer, mainly doing Behests and leves. I did not found any solo-target skill with a better dps than my standard attack. I tried to use spells, but unless they hit at lest 3 targets, I found it wasn't worth it.

Basically all what I did was spamming 1 (with a macro) and a heal here and there.

I am ok with this gameplay during the first 30 minutes of the game. But after that, I expect at least a more interesting skill rotation. And I certainly don't count the unnecessary buff recast as a rotation.

I'm not blamming the devs for the system. Maybe there is a more efficient rotation than spamming 1, but after hours of play I wasn't able to find it.

And this, from my point of view, is exactly the same : after hours of gameplay, I can only spam 1, and this is certainly not interesting.

So if there is actually something better to do than spamming the basic attack, devs should make this clearer to the player. And I'm speaking of in-game information, not obscure hints maybe written on a page of the lodestone.

As explained earlier, 'bigger numbers' or 'different (and visible!) effects' for abilities could be a nice solution.

I personally opposed the auto-attack system, mostly because, even though we're just spamming the attack it feels more, FFish to me, you know. While we do need more abilities, or more reason to use em, I find it more fun to do a couple of attacks, build up my TP then spam a few chain of attack abilities, like Trammel, Leg Sweep, etc. I feel that auto-attack could just take that away.

TBH, I think if combat is more streamlined there wouldn't be such a huge need for auto attacks. There are so many times where I'm hitting the light attack button only to just stand there while unsheathing my sword then waiting for the attack to actually occur. It really frustrates me how clunky the battle system can be at times. But I think if they polish it more and make it so inputs don't take so long to process it would be much better.

Instead of Auto-Attack why not a Command Stack like FFXIII? You select commands to be placed into the queue. Then the abilities are executed like normal. Only difference is you aren't spamming abilities.

An example would be as such:
[Light Attack][Light Attack][Heavy Attack][Weapon Skill][Guard]
[========____________________________________________]

To address the difference between Light and Heavy attack, choosing one or the other could just make that your new auto-attack until you select another.

I think it's been argued by many people that an auto-attack feature is necessary. It's difficult to throw away a system you worked hard on, but in the end, you want players to be comfortable. We would rather talk to one another and worry about buffing our weaponskills than pressing one button over and over and not being able to socialize.

Auto attack is not needed. The problem with the stamina gauge is there is no thought to using it. We should be able to combine attacks with tp moves. Or make it where we put some thought into using stamina weather it be because of the mob we are fighting or its weakness to blunt or pierce... or accumulating stamina for a comboed attack. Combining 2 spells or or 2 tps moves would help with these. This can also lead to better battle regimens.

What I think would be awesome though would be the ability to mix "special normal attacks" (like Pummel or Flurry) in with an autoattack using your stamina bar.
Let's say, for example, a Pugilist attacks every 3.0 seconds with two punches with autoattack. Flurry, Pummel, weapon skills, etc. would all be on the stamina bar and separate from autoattacks. Any abilities used from the stamina bar would delay your autoattack by... oh... 0.6 seconds so the animation could go through smoothly, and to keep the pace reasonable.

Example:
0.0 Autoattack.
3.0 Autoattack.
3.2 Flurry.
6.6 Autoattack.
6.8 Flurry.
7.4 Flurry.
10.8 Autoattack.

So pretty much you could autoattack normally, but you'd also be able to use your stamina bar to throw in some extra punches with Flurry to up your basic DPS, or a few with Pummel for some more TP, or throw in a Victimize for a nice burst of damage (and to make use of TP.)

This type would allow you to feel like the pace of combat is faster (as your character is doing more actions) but less spammy and more tactical (since you are inputting less actions that have a greater consequence.) In the above example you attack 7 times (well, double/triple attacked) in just under 11 seconds, but the input was only 3 actions. But those 3 actions would heavily dictate how combat paces itself.

Good? Bad? Not clear?

I love if they added Auto-attack. I get tired of pressing the same button over and over. It's hard to do other skills while doing that. For example, healing, or buffing. With Auto-attack, or so form of one. This well be fixed I hope.

I feel that auto attack can only benefit the game. While I do enjoy playing games that offer a variety in gameplay, the truth of the matter is this is a MMORPG. It lives by people feeding the developers subscription fees. Square's priority should be bringing in new players and to do that they need to make the game more familiar to MMO players. For this reason, I support an auto attack system regardless of my personal feelings.

Now, for my personal feelings, I like where the combat system is right now but I think the classes could use a lot more variety. If you look at other MMORPGs different classes have their own "gimmick" that makes them feel unique. Some examples are in WoW, Rogue uses energy + combo points, warrior uses rage, death knight uses runic power and runes. These varied resource systems make each class feel unique regardless of whether or not you're spamming 1-2 buttons. I think that a system similar to this would go a long way in making XIV more enjoyable for me.

For example, I play a Thaumaturge. The description (going off memory) was roughly a mage that harnesses both light and dark magics. So why not do some sort of a balance system for Thaumaturge? For each umbral spell you cast, your umbral spells get stronger, but if you cast too many you hit overload and have all of your umbral spells locked out. In order to lower your umbral meter, you have to cast some Astral spells to prevent overloading. This would give Thaumaturge a sort of rotation. This would take place of Stamina, THM resources would be Balance and Mana only.

For Pugilist, there could be like a combo system. This system could be a system where a player queues up several different attacks ahead of time, and different combinations have different effects. They could have like a self battle regimine system similar to how SAM could self skillchain in XI. A Pugilist could have some form of "points" (think runes in wow/death knight) and each ability set in the queue would consume points depending on how much damage it does. They can then release this combo at the expense of all points which would then slowly regenerate over time. The combo would release the attacks at a higher FPS and the benefit would be the high burst which would need to be properly timed so that you dont pull hate. In this system, PUG would use combos and stamina, no mana.

There are major problems with a system like this, though. There are problems with adding new jobs because after the players play with these systems it's hard to top them, there are only a handful of different unique combinations you can really have before they start feeling rehashed. In addition, using a system like this might be difficult without adding some form of auto attack because using my ideas, what would a Pugilist do between combos? Maybe they'll need to seperate their skills into two categories, "Combo moves" and "Regen/Buffs".

tldr: I'm all for auto attack and think that it's probably the dev's most reasonable option, but I do think that there is potential in the current system.

I don't really like auto-attack. It would bring some good with it - like the ability to chat in-battle and focus on skills, but is it really necessary? I like to choose when to attack, to feel like I made that choice, that I'm controling the battle.

If the standard attack is better then the skills, then the skills are lacking, not the attack. And with auto-attack you would never even touch the battle then.

I would not quit the game if auto-attack was introduced "copy-paste" from FFXI.

But if it was to be introduced, I would prefer it be somewhat more refined. Perhaps with more options, like the other posters described.

Or broaden the concept. Why does it have to be an "auto-attack"?? What if it was an "auto-action" that you could configure? Attacks are just one type of action in FFXIV. What if your Conjurer could configure their auto-action to be Cure? Every time the cooldown was ready, a Cure would fly off to whichever PC they were targeting. Naturally, if the Conjurer started initiating a different action, that would take precedence, over the auto-action, just like using a weaponskill would stop a warrior's auto-attack temporarily.

Just a thought.

Auto attack could be implemented in a way that it doesn't really interrupt the way the game currently works. It's quite simple really. First: allow the players to decide what their auto attack action will be. Second: allow the players to toggle the auto-fire of this attack on and off. Third: auto-attacks are only initiated when the stamina bar is at 100%. Fourth: Add a delay value to all weapons, but not like FFXI. This delay value can be multiplied by a base-value per action to determine how much stamina the action consumes. This way we won't have issues where a dagger uses just as much stamina to attack with as a spear does. Also, this will add more depth to weapon selection, which I think is a good thing.

Best solution: Toggle auto-action.

You pick an action and toggle it to automatically execute when stamina is available. Activating another action will override the next action in the auto-action sequence and reserve stamina for it accordingly.

This doesn't require discussion. It's common sense. Should've been in since beta.

as both a conjurer and lancer (Yes i play both ways, and hell yea i like DoM as well) i find that Auto-attack doesnt really benefit the game at all. i can heal and attack at the same time easily without my team mates dying on me when im the only healer. It may take a while to get use to it, but yea i find it enjoyable that im able to play with the current combat system. I have to strongly disagree of adding in Auto-Attack as it will hurt the interval or timing of my next execution input.

All in favor for the current system, but may need more punch in it, Auto-attack does not solve the problem. The fun is there, just not much use of it on the contents, hench the Balancing of Combat should be addressed instead.

Step 1: Get rid of Battle Regimens. They're incredibly clunky.

Step 2: Bring back manual skillchains. Feel free to vary the effects and such, and apply some of the BR effects if you want. Allow mages to participate, and even create their own chains. Yes, this means letting mages skillchain positive spells onto party members for cool effects in addition to simply chaining on mobs. Protect + Shell = Reflect might be cool, for example.

Step 3: If adding auto-attack, make sure that toggled "next attack" buffs apply to manually-triggered skills only. This way there is no worry about wasting a buff on an auto-swing while waiting for stamina or TP to recharge.

Step 4: Make auto-attack easily toggleable and the on/off function responsive, unlike in FFXI where it was toggleable, but took forever to go from attacking -> not attacking -> attacking again.

Note that steps 1 and 2 are independent of auto-attack, and my opinion of something needs to happen regardless.

I'm sorry, but BR(Battle Regimen) is working perfectly fine, i dont see the trouble of doing so.

I just think fundamentally it's un-FF-ey to have to sit and spam a button to attack, mixed with the server lag and the usage of the action bar.. such as switching from slot 1 to 7 using a game controller.. It can be really sluggish and sometimes uneven, I think a complete overhaul to the battle system should be in order and not just an auto attack, even thought I am ALL FOR that feature.

LOL. That what I said. But I was much wordier. Anyway some examples might be ...

• A Thaumaurge sets his auto-action to to Slow when he's in a party, but changes it to Poison when he's playing solo.
• A Conjurer sets his auto-action to Cure when he's is a party, but changes it to Fire when playing solo.
• A Gladiator set his auto-action to Provoke when he's in a party, but changes it to Guard when playing solo.
