You are are correct...I am also BARD and my main craft is LWK and it can get very expensive as without some of the gathering classes leveled we have to buy alot of items at the higher levels of the Crafting Log. Luckily in my FC we have a good group and I can get stuff like Alumen for close to free or some kind of trade for stuff I don't need. I would look into this or you will have not choice but to level Gathering classes or spend a ton of gil to complete your log.
I feel your pain...but there are ways around it.
If you are buying materials from the market board, yes. But if you take the time to farm / craft your own materials, then it's not bad at all. You can sell everything you make for dirt cheap and still come out ahead.
Leatherwork is one of the cheaper ones to level. The reason being that skin->leather->finish good is usually a 1:1:(1 to 2) ratio. Most other crafts have a 2 or higher ratio and additional intemediate steps such as rivets, plates, and/or cloth, resulting in exponential mats requirement.
Also, If you have extra leves to spam, there are many quests that award you skins for turning in 1 item, so you can just buy the initial skin plus aux mats to start your leveling. Some leves even allow you to trade lower tier leather for higher tier skin.
While it does take a while but, Leveling a Gathering class that Correspond to your Crafting class helps alot. For example Since I took up CRP so i can meld bows, I have to get BTN up cause CRP requires alot of logs and lumbers lol. BTN can get all that so I Level both side by side. Its slow but its "Cheap" going this way.
It's a bit of the damned if you do, damned if you don't.
If you could buy all your pelts at 1 or 2 gill each right to cap, you would be selling Ltw goods for next to nothing as well.
It's going to be too expensive to level or not worth the time. I wouldn't be complaining about over priced Ltw. The glut will catch up soon enough.
if you want to craft you should get all DoH classes to level 15 as the cross class you get can really help
Yeah...you're right...just sucks to slow down and craft...Sometimes it can be soooo boring. Going to have to break down and level a gatherer.
It would be expensive if you buy all your skins from the market, but I took the route of leveling all the way to 50 off grinding leather, from skins I farmed on my own. It took me about a week to do it but in the end I came up making a couple hundred thousand off selling leather, minus the cost of any earth shards used. On my server, all leathers sell regularly between 300gil (Peiste) and 700gil (Raptor) per NQ item. Everything else falls closer to 400 gil or so. Leather has a high demand. Take advantage of that and a profit can easily be made.
Ltw is easy and expensive if you buy skins or leather, or time consuming and cheap if you farm them. It doesn't seem like there's any fast cheap way to powerlevel. HOWEVER, if you're leveling multiple battle classes you should just naturally come across many of the skins you'll need, and it wouldn't be hard to just pay a little extra attention to the mobs that drop what you need. I was farming Alumen to get my Min to 20, and have a few stacks that are selling dirt cheap... so I know that not all materials are expensive. It is worth looking at both the cost of the skin and the cost of the leather... I've found HQ skins surprisingly cheaply a few times.
I'm currently above 20 in all DoH and Min Btn. A few of them are noticably different. Cul requires tons of ingredients... but many of them are available at merchants (even for for the 21-25 recipes). Wvr requires an absurd number of steps (1 cloth takes 3 steps, and a lot of recipes use more than 1 cloth. Alc uses some of the very lowest level recipes on the highest items (needed cinnabar for quicksilver, for growth formula for the lv 26 wand). Arm, Bsm, Crp, Gsm all seem pretty normal...
I leveled it by farming the skins myself, which didn't take much time at all. I farmed 100 of each skin type, and that was more than enough to get me to 50. only took a 3-4 hours to get them all. Leatherworking was actually very profitable while leveling.
I'm currently leveling CRP, WVR, and LTW at the same time. LTW is definitely the most expensive, and I'm currently stuck on it until I start farming stuff myself. WVR is also expensive, but Flax is easy to come by if you have BTN leveled, which I do. So I'm currently breaking even, although most of my expenses go into the tons of Lightning Shards it's using up. CRP is very, very cheap to level and I'm not worried about it at all.
LTW, though... Boar skins are going for like 1000g each, non-HQ.
As people have said, LTW is only expensive if you buy the skin/leather. Equip some gear to spiritbind, get out your chocobo and grind away. 2 stacks each of aldgoat, boar and raptor should get you to 50.
The bottleneck for LTW is hippogryph sinew. Not as bad as fleece though.
When you guys say it takes 1-2 stacks of Aldgoat, boar and raptor what are you doing to level? Are you doing the repeatable Leather levequest or other levequests or just making random things? Currently 36 LW and just curious to the most effecient method of leveling. I am on Pieste armor now. I have troubles Critting leather for the levequests with only 40 durability and however much CP I have. I don't have anything but LW abilities.
I still have 56 levequests remaining and I hope they are enough to take me to 50. I'd love to get started on my monks Gryphon armor.
