Extreme lack of quests

I can see having to rely on the fate grind to level alternate battle classes, but you've failed to provided enough quests to get even one to 50. Why?

Fate/dungeon grinding should not be the leveling path. As it presently stands, the game seems to largely end at about 35, and you're just screwing with us to, in large portion, painfully grind out the last 15 levels if we want to see the end of the main story.

Not much of a game when you look at it that way, eh? And largely relying on mind-numbing, unforgivably boring grind to level meaningfully past 35?

Boring. Incidentally, that's the highest cardinal sin a game can commit.

and is quest grinding the best way to lvl? idk, i personally am not a fan. i lvled gld and mrd on dungeons only, and had so much more fun than questing, although it might be because queuing was easy....

The entire population of Balmung's Dragonhead zone disagreed with you on the /shout channel. Collective conclusion: there aren't nearly enough quests to level on past 40. There are some, and one person said that you get a whole bunch of them at 49, but the push from 40-49 is almost pure grind.

Also, DPS queues are bollocks. 30 minute-4 hour waits are the norm. As much as I enjoy doing dungeons, its really just boring to do the same dungeon repeatedly because the only XP alternative you have is doing the fate zergs.

At least quest grinding gives one something to read and a context of story to what's going on. This is a Final Fantasy game, right? RPG? All about story?

I want more story. I do not want to spend leel 46-49 forced into XP grinding, like some of these people are telling me to 'look forward' to.

i recall, SOMETIMES, i was maybe 20 per cent short of lvling, so i did a few fates here and there and got my next lvl, and suddenly every npc had the quest exclaimation marks over their heads.

if you find urself, all of a SUDDEN, ran out of quests, its probably because u r just 1 lvl short of the quest hub. also, im quite sure the game is designed in such a way that we r meant to do all the dungeons, including the optional ones, at least once. if you skipped, say, temple of qarn and cutter's cry, you may have 1 to 3 lvls to catch up on.

tbh, quests dont really disappear until after stealing the magiteck armour, and thats only because dzemael and AV are unlocked.

I don't skip dungeons at all, personally. They've been most of what I've been doing since the quests went largely byebye. I'm not skipping hunt logs either. Its possible that I've somehow missed quests somewhere, but for how I've scoured...not likely.

Hurrumph. Hopefully we'll get more as the game matures. Right now, it feels like I'm back in vanilla WoW trash farming in BRD for xp and barely enough gold to pay for repairs.

I am lv 46 and I still have quests in mo dhorna.. (maybe last ones?)
I also run each dungeon twice
I have not joined a single FATE party so far...

I agree with the OP. Just dinged 43, no quests, having to rely on fates, which I dislike having to do, and leves, again, only a few of the same thing a day. Doing said leves also leaves me struggling to level a profession too. Moar quests plz!

I was LV46 when I did 1 LV of FATE running, after that i went back questing.
at LV47 I entered Mor Dhana and started questing there whilst my story chain was still on LV44.
eventually I made it to LV50 without too much of a hassle, though I did spot quests after I delivered my LV46 main story, those aren't enough to go from 46-49 (at 49 you get the last chain of story). so I see where you're coming from, but to lack more than 2 levels (in total) to hit 49, no. However, I did pick up all side quests along to way to 50.

Yes yes yes yes yes...I want more quests! It's how I like to play...I hate fates, I hate dungeons...I want quests...What is the big deal?

I don't hate fates or dungeons at all. But here's the thing; I can do quests by myself. I don't need a zerg or a team to do them. Fate zergs are uuuuusually easy to find...usually. I pity those trying to grind through these levels when majorities aren't new and aren't leveling briskly through the currently popular zones and next to nobody's doing older/lower level dungeons hardly ever if this doesn't get ameliorated one way or another.

Level design: not just about planning for the one square inch of 'right now', but future-proofing for the thirty cubic miles of 'tomorrow'.

Lesson unlearned. I'll get my XP grinding in while its still going hot and heavy during the new-game-is-new rush.

I intentionally completed every quest I came across in order to soak up the game's lore during my journey across Eorzea. I also did a handful of dungeons along the way, completed my hunting log and dabbled in as many F.A.T.E events as I could whilst passing by them. I also did a few levequests to aid my income of experience. Despite all that I found that I struggled to keep up with the main story quests around level forty, which led me to indulge in the dreaded 'F.A.T.E grind' despite my aversion to it. I'm currently approaching level forty eight and have once again run out of quests to do.

So, how can we solve this? My suggestion would be to increase the experience rewarded from battle levequests in order to make them much more appealing and a viable alternative to F.A.T.E grinding. I'd also suggest that more one time only quests are sprinkled around the game world, especially in the level forty to fifty region. Dungeons should also be more rewarding, one solution I can think of is to provide a bigger experience bonus when experienced players tackle earlier dungeons which should have the added benefit of ensuring that there's a steady flow of players playing through the earlier dungeons.

Every single one of Theodric's suggestions are solid gold and should be implemented immediately. <3 Especially the enhanced rewards for lower level dungeons for higher level people. The story requirement of those is going to have a crisis of use when most folks are at top level and are not turning right back around to level a new class/alt. You set things up very nicely for the one square inch of right now. The thirty cubic feet of tomorrow are going to bring some crushing truths down upon thee however, I fear, because its clear that you didn't really think about tomorrow too much here.

We'll see people struggling to get anyone to help them go through them (low level required for story advancement + make it really hard to do = minorly invested people stop bothering, i.e: quit the game.)

Some people loved how 'hard' Everquest 1 was. Now? If you're cool with Everquest 1's tiny niche market, keep on keeping on. Change nothing. You too can join SWTOR in the F2P bin, 'cause man, if you think It can't happen to you SE...lawl. LAWL. EA/Bioware though that too when they made poor design decisions and banked on a name to keep people throwing money at them.

The sad part? You're not doing anything wrong; you just need to do more of the good stuff.

'Cause nobody cares if you didn't do anything wrong; its whether or not you did enough that was right. More quests and more rewarding leveling involvement'll do you right up. Drown people in quests. Give people so much to do that they can't kick a rock over without finding something to do under it. ENCOURAGE people to make multiple classes; make it fun! Make it exciting!

You could do so many wonderful and amazing things to make people WANT to throw money at you for years and years and years, and I hope you do them! Unlike certain others I could name, its not too late for you!

If you don't like grinding, don't play an FF MMO. Killing trash mobs and turning in items for a quest, or running from NPC to NPC does not teach you how to play a job. If everyone could get to 50 by killing mobs you can 2 or 3-shot, our player base would be worse off than it already is. This isn't WoW, people.

This game will never be free-to-play. You obviously never played FFXI. If you want a game that you can do completely solo, then why play an MMO? FF devs have always been big on team-work, which you don't need if you are quest spamming.

I actually agree. I'm lv 50 and the lack of quests now is terrible. I think there should be other quests for if you level another class. I find the after content formaftermyour level 50 is just not good. I've donemeverynquestmumcsnngetmup to this point. I can't do fates cause I'm on ps3 and all fates are is a bunch of people attacking the air. Everyone says the game doesn't start til you hit 50 I think there is barely anything to do lol. Other then grind to get the best armor and weapon.

It helps to read a post before attempting to oppose it. You've successfully complained against something nobody on this thread was asking for our in any way implying, so while you're talking to yourself over there, consider this; if an individual cannot do what they want to do in the game because their schedule isn't fr time 24/7, they will be less likely to play, sub, stay or recommend the game to others.

Bash WoW all you like; g'head, all the supposedly cool kids are doing it.

Honestly what they should have done is just reset all non story quests when you switched classes, would fix a lot of the leveling an alt problems(would still need to do fates but not even close to as many) and it would go along way towards fixing the economy with all the gil it would put into it.

I just did the quests in Mor Dhona last night. There are only two. Both are lvl 44 I think. You get a combined total of 26k exp. That is not even 10% of a level. I am not counting Leves, just NPC quests. This is my first time through the game with my primary character. Now, it could be that I have failed to unlock some as I haven't completed Titan Easy. But as far a sidequests are concerned, there aren't many after level 40.

FYI, there are quests till 48 as far as I know (I dinged 50 yesterday)
From half 48 to 49 (continue the story) I had to fate grind though but I guess you also have dungeons

Yeah, I found them. They didn't tally up to hardly half a level. Fate grinding was still the most time-efficient solution. What makes it even stinkier is that you cannot be in a pick-up fate party and also be queued for dungeons.

No matter. I have achieved level 50. I have completed the class quest for THM, and will, today, hopefully be completing the main story quest.

And then I'm outta here. I'd looked forward to doing some crafting and exploring the other stuff there is to do in this game, but frankly, seeing how they seemed to have put an autistic potato in charge of organizing the leveling process, I'm not ...I have zero faith that I will find anything but more "WTF I don't even" moments even trying. Level another battle class?

I really like the main story, when I can freaking see it. The schizophrenic mess of getting to 50 that almost no game gets WRONG any more...wealp, they got it wrong. It was boring where it wasn't perplexing for all the wrong reasons and outright frustrating soon enough for both.

'Maybe you didn't find the quests' should not exist as an issue. I scoured the internet and went charging all over the place in game, asked (repeatedly) in various zone /shout channels and so on.

Here's a tip for you SE: If you make me struggle to perform basic tasks (like leveling) in your game, I won't play your game, and I CERTAINLY won't pay you for the privilege of STANDING AROUND IN A FATE ZERG.

In fairness, new game is new game. I realize this. Though I seriously, seriously hope this gets addressed promptly. This is a core game issue. I'd go so far as to say that the leveling path is outright broken; literally broken right off at the end. It doesn't exist; you have to grind the optional zone-flavor group content or you're gonna be sitting there, staring at the very pretty scenery until you die of boredom.

This can't be right. There is no sane game developer that would release an MMO to compete with all the other popular MMO's out there as they are right now and have this be intentional.

You might be forgetting this is at heart a Japanese developed game.

Compared to FF11 and FF14 1.0, this is not a grind. For some reason many Asians (am an Asian but hate grind) seem to think that grind is part of MMO life.

If you think the grind as a battle class is bad, I really suggest you never try gathering.

The quests are enough to get your first class to level 50, might need to do some FATEs and dungeons, but come on guys, it is not really that hard...

Remember that MMO RPGs are build for the long term, you are not expected to get to lvl 50 within a week.

It is the leveling after your first lvl 50 that scares me. After you use all your quests on the first class, you are only left with leves, FATEs and grinding kills.

I hope that they create more repeatable quests for secondary, etc classes. Else it will be FATEs all the way. So all those players screaming for FATE nerfs, please think of the big picture... Not only about your first char...

Repeatable quests would be good. And it doesn't matter if this is grindy compared to FF11 or 14 1.0 or Everquest or Partridge In a Pear Tree with Joseph Stalin; it simply does not matter. What matters; arguably the only comparisons that matter; are whether its a PITA and alienatingly grindy to play compared to SWTOR, WoW, Secret World, etcetera.

Short answer: Its not only far more grindy, but the grind is incoherent. Hide your grind in fun, incremental reward systems (Secret World's ability point farming is beautiful for this) that people are happy to do and they will happily do them. Make them pointless and clearly just...there because someone wanted there to be more grind...and you can take that position and float on it right back where ya came from.

We are, in fact, aware that this is a Japanese-developed game. That doesn't matter and its no excuse; SE has made Final Fantasy games that have, far more often than not, been awesome and engaging for years and years and years. They know how to do it; they simply didn't with 1.0 at all for reasons I shall never understand.

Why? I dunno. But here we are with the reboot.

ARR here doesn't suck. This is, in fact, a pretty dang good game I think, and I am not an easy customer to satisfy, let alone impress. I've been satisfied with most things about it, and impressed by a few. I do not expect some bizarre and arcane notion of personalized perfection, or indeed a single player Final Fantasy experience in MMOville.

I do, however, expect some evidence to be displayed that the FF:ARR team is aware of coherent level design practices, 'cause this feels...disjointed. Unfinished. I used the term schizophrenic before; it feels like the product of a schizophrenic mind that begins twelve sentences and finishes none of them coherently, if it finishes them at all.

You're going along questing, quest quest, run around, whee this is neat, oh hey, all this quest text has shown me a lot about this part of the world, and that part of the world, and oh man I want to see more of the story, and suddenly, you get to the mid-30's or so, and...there's just fewer and fewer quests.

Am I missing something? Maybe there're hubs I'm not finding. Explore, explore, explore. Do hunt logs because hey, its XP and why not? Look online. Hum. I keep finding similar complaints, and ...well this isn't promising. Recurring declarations of the main story stopping at 47 and not picking back up until 49 with...next to nothing to do but grind fates and dungeons between?

This one might yet be. Its a new game and they could do a whole lot. Whether they ever read this polemics of mine, I'll never know; I hope they do. This is not a friendly environment to play in. This game is hostile with 'challenge' in places challenge has no business in being, like basic functions and core gameplay.

But hey, it'd also be challenging to pull the steering wheel out of your car and make you figure out how to drive it without one.

If you want it bad enough, you'll find a way.

While I agree on disliking this so do I see why they have this issue. This is because of one reason and that is that people should do PUGs. They know that the community at large will at start enjoying single player content more than multiplayer content so they want to slowly "force" the playerbase to do PUGs to get into the whole group thing before they hit 50. Another clear indicator of this is that dungeons are part of the main story which means you have to do them. Trust me, you would NOT want to run through the end game dungeons with a PUG full of people who have just done all the dungeons the main story enforced them to do...

The reason why they do not reset quests is probably that they want more experienced players to join the less experienced ones in early game PUGs. They want new gamers to play with more experienced ones to learn how their classes works to indoctine them into MMORPGs. They do this less annoying for experienced players by offering extra xp if there's any people doing the dungeon for the first time. This is a simple solution to how to keep old players interacting with new players while there's no reason whatsoever to make alts.

Yes, I dislike this as much as everyone else. I like to quest grind through the entire game like everyone else and I would love more quests between 40-50 and some dailies that might or might not involve dungeons (that would be sweet and the imo the best solution to add dungeon dailies). But I try to see beyond my own needs. Can you even guess how annoying it would be to go through the early game when the game is not new especially as a DPS? The queue times we've seen for dungeons would be nothing compared to how they would be then if older players was not forced to grind low level PUGs or FATEs while leveling ALT classes.

But I do reallyreally hope they in the 2.1 patch add some (if not ALOT) quests between the 38-48 part of the game. I hope they just got lazy because they thought this issue would not be adressed because "only grinders will get to 40~ before next patch" thinking. I really do... But atleast they have promised us dailies if I do not remember wrong. :)

The way i would like to see it done is to be able to merge your chars into one main one ie.

If you want to play say a WHM at end game then you would level your CNJ up to level 50 then make an Alt ARC and level that this way you will not have already done the quest and then at a time of your choosing you Merge the Char's into one playable Character after doing the relevant job quest.

You will still have to do a little Fate grinding but at least on your second Char you will have had all the quests available for you to do as if was a new char.

Hahaha. Nobody's grinding dungeons and fates below their level for very long as it is, Lunavi. Dragonhead and North Thanalan are hotspots on Balmung for the 35-50 fate grind. Prior to that, its not necessary on your first trip to 50 and I can honestly say I don't know where lower level hotspots even are; there were quests aplenty and I was doing them, hitting fates when they were there and looked fun to jump in on. 1-35ish or so was perfect. All they need to do is more of what they inexplicably stopped doing, and then let it, in some way/shape/form, be doable for other battle classes afterward.

Being story-forced into PUG dungeons is a bad idea. You said why yourself, Lunavi; just imagine how much its gonna suck in oh...a year...to level a new character, if this hasn't changed much by then? Right now we've got all kinds of new-game-is-new rushing about, and queue times are still abysmal for DPS.

I completely agree with OP I said during phase 3 BETA when I ran out of things to do baring a lvl 15 thaum quest I was too weak to complete, that no mmorpg expecting people to pay a sub should ever make the player feel theres nothing to do. It is a cardinal sin. Dont get me wrong the game is brilliant , I play games like wow and guild wars and lotro and never in thnose games have I ran around painfully grinding 8-10 levels..for me 35-40 nearly killed the game I completed my thaum to then not be able to do BLM quests until 35 and Id done all local quests. Im now encountering the same lull from lvl 43-45.what are people going to do when in 12 months time people who are new want to kill ifrit for instance but no one is around or dont want to do it? Theres no reward or reason to repeat past dungeons/instances. I want this game to thrive as I love mmorpg games and final fantasy but everything the OP has stated is pure truth and it could seriously hurt the game in the long run

Exactly where did I state that I thought this was a good idea?. The only opinions I stated was that I did not want to run through end game contents with people with no group experience or knowledge about how their class works in a group whatsoever and that I do agree with adding more quest content for lv 40-50. The rest I said is the possible thinking behind their choices. I even clear as the day state that I dislike these designer options but I atleast try to understand why which atleast made it easier for me to live with now when the game is "new", but I expect 2.1 to adress this issue in a proper way with the add of dailies, otherwise I will complain like hell if it is still requires alot of FATE and dungeon grinding to reach 50 with your first class.

why people like to gain exp via quests is beyond me. maybe it's the ffxi in me, but dungeon-ing is intensely fun especially if you are the tank or healer; and I get close to 1000 exp per monster in dungeons at lvl30 - not the fastest but it's enough - not to mention i get loots to trade in and some could even be sold, and heaps of allagan coins, and you get to party with people, and you get to learn game mechanics, and you get help people, and you get to have fun, and you get to, well you get the drift.

First I was going to ask if you hacked the game, then I saw that you have only played healer and tank. DPS classes do not have the luxary to simply join a dungeon. Quoue times can be up to 45 min at times. At worst I have waited far over 1 hour to do dungeons. When waiting for 5 different it has been up to 30 min and then I could get into a dungeon 10 levels below me that did generate almost no experience what so ever.

Hah. You only play heals/tank and you don't understand the problem. There's a surprise.

Dungeons are great fun, sure. Though, according to your logic, we should just...not play DPS anymore, 'cause DPS queues are 30 minutes - 4 hours long at all levels. They're not going to get better as time goes by. They will, in fact, get substantially worse.

DPS classes don't get insta-queues; we don't get to do dungeons every time we feel like clicking the button to do them. Try it sometime. When you get really sick of staring at the pretty scenery while watching your wait time in the queue tick over past hour 2, you have no quests and you're not doing so hot being forced to remain solo in fates, come on back.

We'll have a chair waiting for ya.

Let's retrace our steps to OP's point of there not being sufficient quest, which I have disagreed in my initial posts, and I could swear to God the quests were always there for me when I lvl-ed mine, as was agreed with by numerous others who replied here.

Then the thread went on to mention how FATEs are dry and boring and grindy. I therefore offered another solution - dungeons. Granted, I got it easy (lucky!) since I enjoy tanking and supports classes all along - but my point was, if FATEs annoy you, why don't you make it possible to level via other means, which in this case, dungeons. I would have totally tried to form an EXP/Dungeon party that just run the dungeons.

I reckon your response to that would be "but dungeons do not yield exp as efficiently as FATEs and therefore it is more preferable to just grind FATEs anyway". Well then that is a conscious choice you are making... Like myself, I could have chosen the more efficient FATE path, but I chose to do dungeons instead. Am I slower? Yes, for sure... But am I having fun? Ye definitely.

I love dungeons, personally. I do them as often as I reasonably can, and couldn't care less if they're not strictly the fastest way to get XP compared to certain zones' fate zergs. Rolling DPS, one does not get to just do dungeons, unless you have people in your pocket that say "Yes Ma'am" and do what you say, when you say, how you say 24/7.

I do not have such slavishly loyal minions, alas. When I'm staring own the barrel of having about 3 hours to play, I have a couple options.

I can get a guaranteed hunk of XP being bored in a fate zerg party

I can be in a queue for a dungeon that will probably not pop, or will do me dirty and pop when I've got about a half hour left.

We SHOULD have the option of being able to do quests in what are otherwise dead-air times. Tanks and healers often get instant queues at all levels of play, and that's jazzy for them. I've played tanks and heals in other games and enjoyed the same celebrity status with groupfinder activities. I've seen not one slight, teensy difference for how its shaping out here for that.

There aren't enough quests; there isn't anywhere near enough that's fun to do. You can disagree all you like, Shuon; that's your right.

FFXIV already took a fifty foot face-skid across the shag carpet once already, though. Grindy, boring BS that is neither interesting nor fun doesn't sell anymore, and there are too many good options in the MMO market for something like this to have an icicle's chance up Ifrit's bum of surviving if they don't make it REALLY FUN to level things from 1-50.

Not brainlessly easy. Not 'XP from the sky and handed out on silver platters'. FUN THINGS TO DO.

Because even doing the same dungeon 26 times is really damn boring after about run 5 for most reasonable people, and elsewise having to rely on Fate zergs for anything resembling meaningful XP acquisition?

1999 called; Everquest 1 wants its bad ideas back. People tend to like positive engagements; rewarding activities, actively fun stuff to do; anymore.

But don't hang that phone up yet; 2013 called. SWTOR would like to tell you 'A big-name IP and a popular dev studio doesn't mean jack if your game just isn't fun to play'. Bioware made a Star Wars game that was like a pathetic clone of WoW circa 2007 and thought this was a good idea; insisted on it. Banked hundreds of millions on it.

They were wrong.

FFXIV 1.0 made it all the way to retail, with people at SE absolutely certain it had a fighting chance despite the fact that it was largely manufactured out of Stupid, WTF, Fail and I Don't Even Know What This Is Trying To Be Here.

Now we have ARR. It better be REALLY FUN TO PLAY, or that floor with bloodstains from some of the most supposedly unbeatable combinations of studio and IP that've ever existed and a 50' long Square-Enix FFXIV face skid through the middle of it?

It'll get another big, ugly, digitally bloody skidmark. Nothing more.

Here's the single, simple fact: leveling even one battle class just isn't fun as it is now. Its tedious in lots of the wrong ways and it makes you struggle inexplicably to even find means of gaining XP. Why does it do this? I'm hoping its because its a new game and they haven't gotten all the quests and content out yet.

You might disagree. You might enjoy what oyu enjoy as you enjoy it. That's great; most wouldn't. I point at many MMO's that have failed because their core game WAS NOT FUN TO PLAY. Now, I'll point at the games that are livin' large and lounging comfortably on their titanic mountains of gold (Looking at you, WoW).

Know what WoW does that most MMO's don't? It keeps you engaged at all times. You can't hardly run in a random direction and not find a hundred different things to look at, do or wander into and explore. A new player in WoW could easily spend the next year or two being just utterly immersed and lost in Azeroth, and not once lack for TOO MUCH to do rather than nothing worth doing at all.

New game is new game. I hope; I sincerely, ferverently hope; that the flagrantly anemic and broken leveling path is made much, much more fun...sooner than later.

Its kind've important. MMO's, as people keep thinking me unaware, are supposed to be long-term affairs.

If your core gameplay isn't selling your game, you're done. Go home.

I'm willing to bet that if we got 100 random people and had them try to play ARR in this state, clear to 50, over half of them would flat-out quit before level 20 just because being forced into dungeons ...isn't brilliant game design. It never was, and it only ever worked because, when it worked, there weren't numerous, good other games to play instead of putting up with what feels a lot like abuse in this one.

Well, abuse if you're a DPS anyway, 'cause THEM QUEUE TIMES. AHGAHD, that is untenable and I pity this game's future when people still need to do those dungeons to advance the core story, upon which EVERY BIT OF THE REST OF THE GAME IS GATED, and 99% of the playerbase is going 'lol noob get an FC' to anyone asking for help doing those.

This isn't a matter of what you like or don't, Shuon. This is an address of things that are as close to objectively bad, wrong and stupid to do in a modern MMO as is likely to ever be seen.
