People who don't grind FATEs...

Genuinely curious...

I know the majority of people grind fates to 50 in record time. I also read tons of forum posts, and see that there are lots of people who are bored at 50.

Personally, I have probably completed about 6 or 7 fates on my way up to a modest level 37. Now, before jumping to the attacks, I know I am a casual. I have kids, a career, and other engagements that limit my play-time to about 10 hours a week. In that time, I've leveled my main to 37, weaving to 33, armorer to 22, Botany to 26, Miner to 20, and most of the other crafts to level 5-10.

I feel that, given my short play-time, I've accomplished alot, and I am actually very content with this game. I look forward to the short play-time I have each day. I'm excited to log in, and I hate when 11pm rolls along and I have to go to sleep before my next work day.

I know I could just grind fates and hit 50 in a few hours, I'm totally aware of that. But why would I ever WANT to do that? I guess I'm lucky I don't fit into the North-American MMORPGer mold and wanting to "worlds first everything". So many people think this game sucks, and that they have nothing to do, and that they think it isn't worthy of a sub. Those same people grinded fates to 50, missed mostly everything this game has to offer, and are basically leaving already, without one new content patch ever making it live.

Although it is more than likely too late, for the people who aren't content with the current game, I suggest you try leveling a new class entirely through quests and dungeons, with the OCCASIONAL fate thrown in there. Don't join fate grind parties. Try to level up with a friend. It is such a different experience, and it has been tremendously entertaining for me, at least.

Also I'd like to ask, are there any more of you out there like me? Have you never joined a Fate grind party? I haven't, and I absolutely adore this game. And I know that if I would have zerged my way to 50, I'd probably be as bored as the rest of you.

This game has lots to offer, and I think you are doing it a great injustice by mindlessly zerging your way to 50, and then coming to GD to spread your vitriol about how 'boring' and 'generic' this game is.

Still, there is no debate that the most viable way to plow through levels is fate-grinding. And you can be sure, Bimble, that you are in the minority. The majority of the people you are running those fate groups with only have one class, and they will only ever have one class. It is that instant-gratification crowd that will never take the time to level a second class, and never truly experience how an FF MMO is meant to be played. They will fate-grind to 50, complain about 'end-game', and then spread these false rumors that the game has no content, is bugged and 'boring' and 'weak' to all of their friends, and never truly give this game the chance it deserves.

This game is all about having multiple classes leveled to cap, crap, look at how it was in XI and XIV 1.0. Did we ever complain then? We didn't even have fates, or quests, for that matter. Yet still people grinded away multiple classes to 50/75 without many complaints. I hope I still have the stamina to keep going without the help of Fates once I start leveling a DD class, but only time will tell.

I also like that the replies from people who are taking their time are really enjoying the game. What a breath of fresh air, and thanks for remaining civil in counter-arguments, everyone.

Been playing this char since the start of beta 4 and my highest level class is 42 (taking a comfortable pace). I have done hundreds of fates along the way, but haven't really done any grinding.

While I agree that fates in their current form are highly flawed, if you don't mindlessly grind them for hours on end they aren't as bad as some people make out.

If someone wants to grind fates to lever their character. Than let them. That their choice. You shouldn't tell people how to play the game they payed for.

They can do so if they want. Where in my OP did I forbid them from doing fates? I am just suggesting an viable alternative, the route I chose, since most of them seem so discontent with the current game. What I am saying is, they basically abused a flawed feature, got to level cap, and now they complain there is nothing to do at level cap.

I have never had that problem, and I never will, because I don't feel the need to rush to the end-game. If they want to grind fates, all the power to them. I just don't understand their perceived need to do so, and then come cry when they realize they circumvented most of the content.

I don't want to dictate how people play the game, I am just pointing out that fate grinding isn't the only viable way to play this game, and if you look through most threads, you'll see that most people think this is the case.

I'll get slightly off topic with this, but bear with me. :)

I prefer to do all the quests solo, because I'm a slow reader and take time to process what I read (being non-native English speaker) and I always feel rushed and that I need to hurry up so my leveling-buddies don't have to wait for me. But I do agree it's tons of fun to level 1-2 buddies when doing the next round of classes. Been leveling monk with a white mage and paladin to lvl 33-34, we've learned to play our classes pretty well as we've mostly leveled through dungeon runs instead of mindless "aggro everything in sight asap" FATEs. Only downside is that two of us are at work on different times so we get to play together maybe once a week, so the leveling is slow. :S

I don't get why people call them trash mobs anyways. Do you just want a dungeon run to be all bosses and no elite mobs? That wouldn't be fun at all! The mentality nowadays is rush rush rush and that is killing MMOs, for me, at least.

The only time they're really complaining about the minor mobs of monsters is when they hit level 50 and during the endgame dungeons. They do not drop any items, gil, nor do we gain any exp from them either. This is exactly why they're "trash mobs" at that level. Pre-50, however, they're amazing for experience. You'll see once you casually make your way there. But as you've stated before, just take it easy. There's alot of dbags in the lvl 50 crew. Good luck!

I've Fate grinded one level so far, from 37 to 38 I believe. Then I realized that I hadn't even finished the Hunting Log. Yeah, so there's basically a lot to do I guess and I can recommend to do everything else before fate grinding.

Right, I didn't take that into consideration, and it does make sense, to a certain extent. However, these dungeons give ToM and ToP, and I think that the trash is added to those dungeons to give them some substance, and make them last longer, so that grinding tomes isn't ridiculously easy.

I think its a good thing, even though it is superfluously extending existing content. There still needs to be SOME amount of time-sinks. It's an MMO!

I did dung leveling up till about level 40.

At 40 I did Story + Dung + Fates

At about 45ish you pretty much have to grind fates if you want to level up in a timely manor.

Now honestly I would rather be in a mob chain party than do fates but its almost impossibly to get people away from fates and you need atleast a good 6 man group to chain mobs in a timely fashion.

I fated straight to 50. 1-30 I took some leve's and dungeons and occasional fate. 30-40 I did Fates in Costa Del Sol and Coerthas. 40-45 Was coerthas entirely, and 46-50 I did in Northern Thanalan after discovering the Dark Devices Fate (DD).

1-30 I got the hang of the game over two weeks. 31-50 Took me 5 days at about 5 hours a night, so around 30 hours.

My current level 22, I've been Exp Partying which I find to be faster and a little more engaging to get to 40. Imo 40-50 will always be best in coerthas + northern thanalan.

If this was actually reality, it would be wonderful. Unfortunately, it is not. Trash mobs in dungeons are a mindless zerg. Bosses are really the only encounters with interesting mechanics, so I would certainly not be sad if they were to remove trash mobs in their current incarnation. However, I would much prefer it if they weren't lazy, and actually designed trash mobs that required some thought to achieve their slaughter.

My wife and I are the same way as the OP... I really don't know why there are so many that think "I have to be the first" such as hitting 50 or the people that simply think they need to get up to 50 asap. Why? We do pretty much all the quests that we come across, dungeons, and the fates that cross our path. We are having a blast with FFXIV to be honest. We bought collectors of the original and another collectors for re-release, and we are not FF fanboys by any means. As a matter of fact this is our first FF game ever. Although we are lower lvl and I cannot truthfully comment on what happens at lvl 50 yet I really don't have any sympathy for those that hit lvl 50 a week after the game was released saying this game sucks I have nothing to do. Considering they missed 95% of the game they are cutting their nose off to spite their face.

Long story short is people need to slow down, however it just doesn't work that way with so many people, they have to have it "NOW".

I have been in one fate group and had a blast, but to be honest I am mostly doing GC grinding for seals, I get pretty decent XP. I would do a small group with GC seals.

I grind fates but I'm only 38/15/8/11/14 I think I leveled last night. But I don't play much with work, gym, etc. I personally feel a little bored with just fates and story quests, but at the same time I really don't want to start up doing quests again and hunting them down.

I also agree that at 50 mobs exp should replace with something else, even a small amount of seals.

I totally agree with OP. Those gamers that want first everything make me sick lol. They dont realize its not a competition, its not a race to the finish. What I find hilarious is the players that get thier drops leave thier character afk with their weapon drawn just to show it off lmao. Whats even more funny is those players complained about the 30 minute auto logout feature just because they wanted to leave their characters afk showing the goods lol.

I really wish people would enjoy the game instead of burning through it skipping cutscenes using exploits as shortcuts, then complain that theres no content.


But, yeah I never grinded fates either cuz there is so much more to do. I like accepting all the quests in the area then do fates here and there when they pop up .

Dont concern yourself with how others play. Just do your thing and be happy. They will do there thing and be happy. Its not a race but some of us still like to be in the front. Even with 2 level 50's Im still behind many as I try to collect the best gear before moving forward.

FATE grinding is fun to me, Seeing if i can get enough golds for an achievement. Meeting people. Its all good. The questing ends at 50 you have a few high exp quest at 48 49 which will get you close to the million exp you need for the last couple of levels. But after that you have nothing but fate and dungeons. My only real issue with fate grinding is that most are content with leveling to 50 in quest or npc gear. Then they come to the primal fights or end game dungeons in that crap.

I can't stand fates.

It has nothing to do with the players...it's the system.

I'll be in South Shroud and all of the sudden I will see 300 people on mounts running back and forth over and over. It reminds me of a Stampede on National Geographic. They all run to a fate and in 1.9 seconds, the fate is over.

Maybe I am just insane...but I am not into leveling 50 in a few days. This is a MMO and an MMO, in my opinion, is about the adventure to get to end level.

You know all the 50s will now be stuck grinding the relics, etc and then when those are done (it doesn't take long) then they will be upset because they're bored. It's happened in every single MMO...like some kind of unwritten rite of respect to powerlevel yourself to 50...except in this game there isn't much of an effort to do so when you and 400 other people spam fates in the same zones.

Fates are a good alternative to questing.

But that's just the point. They do their thing - meaning they rush to lv50 without actually completing, as pointed out, about 95% of the game content, and then they aren't happy, since it's generally those same people that keep crying about being bored...

Anyhow: {Congratulations!} and {Thank you.} to the OP. Finally someone's talking some sense in these forums. Couldn't agree more with basically everything said there.
Been playing since B4 myself, but my main is only lv43, with sub being 22, BSM 28 and BOT 18. That's it. And regardless of how we should just play the game the way we want to - it does get frustrating when more than half (and that % is getting higher every day) of the convo in your FC is about things you haven't even heard of yet. True, it can be turned off, but then might as well leave the group... and from what I see, other groups aren't that much different either. It's quite mind-boggling when someone's asking about a dungeon 10-something levels below mine one day, and then is about 10-something levels ahead of me not two days later...

I don't like fates and don't have a level 50 yet. Now that I've typed that lemme type that once you level through one class the other classes you want to level have half the methods you could use the first time around. Fates become more and more appealing because of the other options not giving you much of anything. I've done fates on other classes to get back to my main but usually cause I'm in a really long duty finder timer. I think the leveling aspects of this game need work. Even when you slow down like those of us who have yet to even hit 50 it still can be tedious going through another class.

Typing this on launch break at work....has been a pain...

Personally used fates to level from 38ish to 45ish, now I have been doing other things (getting gear, dungeons, quests) and I wasn't even looking to level up, yesterday doing that I got 3 levels o.O every time I leveled I was like "lol wut, wasn't even paying attention to exp".

Dungeons are more fun than fates :P and might as well get some good armor pieces to sell for good money ñ.ñ

I have got to lvl 45 mostly of story and side quests, dungeon runs for gear, and some leves here and there. I do fates if they pop up next to me as I am working on quests. This has created a kind of balance where I have not gotten bored of one particular thing. We will see what happens when/if I get around to wanting to lvl a second class though.

I never did FATE grinding, at least not yet.

I did jump into any nearby fates I saw on my way up to 50. It helps to keep things interesting and give you a diversion from otherwise monotonous activities.

People who just power grind to 50 are really missing out. The story is great and very rewarding, the dungeons provide necessary equipment and boss training. People who just grind fates are risking being poorly equipped when they get to 50, and poorly skilled. The difficulty of boss fights ramps up in a specific way from 15 to 50. You aren't meant to power grind to 50 and then jump directly into the difficult end-game bosses.

I feel compelled to point out that not everyone who's 50 already "rushed" there. And the tone of several posts imply disdain for people who haven't taken as much time as they have to get to 50, on the assumption that they skipped tons of content. If you're going to insist that other people respect your playstyle, respect theirs as well.

I didn't rush to 50, but what I did have was a lot of free time at launch. Had time off work by happy coincidence, have no family or responsibilities, and heck, even when I work I'm remote so I don't even have a commute. So I'm able to put lots of time into the game. I leveled to 50 by doing hunting logs and queues and only actively ran after FATEs three times on the way to 50. Each time it was because I was out of quests at that level, done with hunting logs, and just a level away from the next step in the storyline.

So now I have a class to 50. I did some endgame stuff, and wanted to level other classes. And that's when I exhausted almost all the rest of the side quests I'd missed and didn't have storyline quests to push me along. So getting to 50 was easy. Getting another class past 15 was considerably slower.

So now, look at my options: I can grind leves, grind dungeons, grind mobs, and grind FATEs. Also hunting logs, which are a given (I love the hunting logs). Leves have limited grants per day. Dungeons are fun, but it only takes a few runs before they feel very repetitive - and there are only so many times I can hold back the tears when the DF gives me yet another tank who only spams DPS combos or focuses on a single target (yes, I try to help them. Maybe 1 in 5 actually listens).

But I do get an armory bonus to XP from mobs and from FATEs. So right there in the game's design, it's encouraging me to FATE grind, because it combines both those bonuses. And I find it dull and annoying, but if I want to plod through lower levels at something greater than a glacial speed, wading through content I have already seen on another class, then my best choice is, sadly, FATEs. Further, with FATE groups around, my best chance for any reward is to join those stampeding hordes rather than try to compete with them solo.

I agree that players shouldn't rush to 50 through FATE grinds (I'd at least like to see them dungeon more so they don't suck at endgame dungeon grinds). But don't play the "people in FATE groups are rushing through the content" card unless you've checked their search info. Many are in there because aren't any other good ways to level alternative classes.

No hurry, I'll unlock level 50 when it happens.

I also hardly do Fates...much more interested in the quests & dungeons/Instances, and enjoying the overall game itself ;)

end game there's a lot to do, just ppl wanna rush and rush to get the best b4 every one else, and this game might not be for everyone but i've been really enjoying it. only thing I dislike is having 2 run AK over and over just to get the tomes b/c its the only dungeon that drops mythology

I like the idea of Fates, I don't like the current zerg style of them making it so easy to gold medal in party and rack up lots of exp if you have aoe in party. Some of them can be quite challenging and are fun if you have a smaller amount of players on them. That being said though, I have fate grinded a few times. Like yesterday, I did it for a little bit to get my lvl 44-45 done for paladin so I could gain my 4 pieces of AF gear and be able to start running in Dzaemol Darkhold with somewhat decent gear. I think before that, the last fate grind was for 28-30 so I could start my paladin quest. So I guess I like to use them for that little extra push towards a goal.

Like you I am not max level nor have I done too many fates along the way thus far. I've used the obvious methods things like hunting log, dungeons etc as well as using crafting to level a few other classes I'd like to try out later in pvp. I don't really want to raid so I'm not in a hurry and would rather have a choice of classes for pvp as the skills will be somewhat different then the pve ones. I'm trying to level all crafting classes as evenly as possible which has made my inventory situation a bit of a mini game to say the least. Combining my crafting with leveling characters seems to work really well. When I need a specific material I rarely ever buy it from a vendor. I'll switch to one of my other characters depending on the level of mats I need and go get them myself. I don't come back until I've got a full stack of whatever (bit of OCD there) and joining in on whatever fate happens around me. I have not even touched the side quests in any city/town/outpost yet. I'm saving all of those for when I am years down the road and they introduce Dancer (hint :P) or some other class I really am desperate to play. Then I will have a quick way to level. I am mostly saving my guildleve allowances for crafting though sometimes I use them to give myself a little nudge at the end of a level. I'm patient is your answer. I'm in no hurry.

Personally I don't see the FATE zergs as a feature. It is more of a flaw to me and one I hope gets fixed as it isn't fun to watch or take part in as a character of the appropriate level to the fate. Large numbers of 8 man groups remove any hint of a challenge to the fates and it's over sometimes before you even get started. I realize that will leave a hole for leveling for some but again I don't see a problem with the speed myself.

No problem with them doing this if they wish. The problem is when they go on the forums and start making posts about how this game is bad, boring, and dead. It's unnecessarily negative and adds nothing of value to the forums. It's ok to not like the game, but don't make critical posts after you have powered your way through and complain that there is nothing left to do.

or give the open world mobs more XP. Its funny how Sastasha's mob give more XP than a L40 normal monster... rofl

I would really like the Merits from FFXI to be in once you get to 50.
