Legitimate Complaint List and Suggestions

Legitimate complaints I hope Square works on or allows us to mod:
1. Do non-combat actions while mounted (talk to people, queue, check marketplace, etc)
2. Be able to mount while companion is out (thus dismissing the companion and resummoning him when dismount if able to, so you don't spam Gysahl Greens)
3. Ability to filter buffs/debuffs to your liking (like only your debuffs on boss/only castable buffs on party/only debuffs on party/etc)
4. Remove the invisible gcd from secondary abilities and items (personal/opinionated)
5. Allow an option for offensive abilities to auto-pick a closest target if there are none currently targeted

1/2/3/5 are all purely positive additions, 4 I set as opinionated/personal because I think it would be overall more enjoyable for everyone's experience but I'm not sure if it would be deemed overpowered.

Thank you SE/moderators if any of you take notice of these suggestions/complaints. And thank you other forum posters if you add to this list.

6. Filter out the profanity spoken by NPC's. Give an option for clean dialogue which would omit profanity or replace it with a milder explitive (bugger, bloody, blasted, etc.).

As I stated in the other thread you posted.. this isn't direly breaking the game and ruining it for a lot of people. It just seems to be you. And what about all the voiced cut scenes that use profanity? You going to demand they get the Voice Actors back in to record kid friendly lines?

I'd like to be able to have my choco out while registering for Duty Finder... This is probably the most irritating restriction to me..

I'm aware that this isn't breaking the game. The OP seemed to want a list of complaints and suggestions, so I posted my suggestion. There is an option in game to filter out profanity by other players, so why not make a filter for NPC's as well? As for the voice acting, I would be content with muting their voices and getting cleaner subtitles. I'm not demanding a thing.

This change wouldn't affect you if you decided to not check the box. There's no reason to get bent out of shape about something that wouldn't affect you. If you agree or disagree with an idea that affects you, click like or discuss it. If the idea doesn't affect you, ignore it.

There are literally over 1 million strings of text dialogue registered to over 5,000 NPC's in this game. What you're asking would not take a month or half a year.. it would take far too long to sort through all those strings of dialogue to highlight every word of profanity and then re-code it to where the profanity is in it's own separate string of code apart from the full dialogue, then code it to a trigger button to change when someone clicks that "profanity filter for NPC's" button.
Honestly if you can't handle the current dialogue, skip through it all or find another game.

Again, you're getting too upset about this. I never said that I couldn't handle it. I would, however, like to recommend this game to the younger people in my family (little sister, little cousins, and daughters), but I won't while there is excessive profanity. Everything else is amazing, so it's unfortunate that I can't recommend this to them.
Regarding the time commitment, you didn't develop this game, so you can't know for certain how long it would take. They may have a way to pull up all dialogue and use a "Find and Replace" type function to replace profanity with *. Maybe the profanity filter already in the game could also pick up on NPC dialogue. Also, this is a request to something that offends some people (if not, then why is there a profanity filter built into the chat system?), not a request to add footprints while I ride my chocobo or new animations to lean on a table.

You think I'm getting upset about this? You have no idea how big of a grin I have and how hard I just snorted at that. So you're saying you can read emotion through text? Please teach me this sight beyond sight.

This game is rated T for Teen. Children below 13 are not advised to play the game no matter how fantastical fantasy it may be, and how much you think it appeals to them. It's rated T for Teen because of.. oh whats this on the box? "Language, Mild Blood, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence."
Next you're going to tell them to remove the drunk NPC's in taverns and the barkeep that says "You look awfully ...sober. Might be we can fix that."
Let's not forget the NPC's all over talking about Concubines, crotch hitting wenches, and of course that insane guy who is attempting to make a sacrifice in the name of his dravian god in the prison in Coerthas. Which by the way.. he explains the entire process.

You're only lvl 22, and apparently new to this MMO, so I'm pretty sure you haven't seen the vast bulk of explicit content in this game.
In other words? Don't request changes to make a game that's been like this since 2010, child-proof and kid friendly. This isn't Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean.

Dude, it's not like the language is even that bad. It's actually pretty damn mild when you consider some of the things on the television these days. Your children and every other child in the world is going to be exposed to language much worse than what's in this game. I don't understand the logic in trying to hide it from them when such action is a losing proposition anyway. How about instead of sheltering them, you just be a responsible parent and teach them that such language is for adults? You're talking about a massive waste of time and man hours that very few other people playing this game really cares about. I don't know about you, but I'm a Big Boy and responsible for myself, my own decisions, and who I expose to this game. You should do the same instead of trying to make the developers responsible for what your kids are exposed to.

I don't see what you guys are getting so worked up about. Filters for NPC dialogue is a good suggestion, and honestly should have been bundled together with filters for player chat. Obviously there is some profanity in the voice overs, and anything in subtitles is nothing compared to the actual scenes of violence and adult themes in the game (Torture scenes, sexual suggestions, alcohol, etc.). Even with this feature the game is not appropriate for children, and if profanity in subtitles is what kills the game experience, the player will likely not get far. But any suggestion that allows more people to play the way they want to play is a valid suggestion and should not be blindly put down. Even I could see some occasions where I would have liked such a feature.

As for how long it would take... Really, not long? Having experience with game development myself, I can say that every game is different. I've never worked with something as big or with as much dialogue as final fantasy. But size tends not to make a difference when you need the same few lines of code to handle every line of text in the game, maybe just pasted in a few different areas. It's a computer game, you don't have to go in and rewrite it by hand, or make two versions of every line of text just to add some ***'s - not if you know what you're doing. Do you really think they have a team of devs sitting somewhere, screening every line of player chat and changing swears as they come in? They have a code for that, and I'm pretty sure it would work the very same way to catch profanity in subtitles.

Again, the code needed to do this could likely be taken pretty much as-is from the chat filters. There would be no additional localization needed, unless they wanted to go crazy and translate all old style slang, and very little new code would actually be written. No, this still wouldn't make the game appropriate for children, but that is largely irrelevant, as WHY Boubonic wants this feature should not be the deciding factor in whether or not it is a reasonable suggestion. You might as well say that player chat does not need a filter because any player old enough to play the game should be mature enough to handle profanity. It's still a matter of player preference.

Skipping that complete generalization of children, for all you know the young family members mentioned aren't CHILDREN, but simply coming from a more reserved background. I would have had the same problem with my cousins, even at 16. The content was fine, but heaven forbid there should be a bad word in a video game...

My sister and oldest daughter are over 13, and my youngest is nearly 13. I realize that they hear profanity. I also realize that there are themes too strong for underage children in this game. The people that I would recommend this game to aren't under 13.
Honestly, I'm only really offended by "godsdamned" (this is due to my religion). I know that I can just quit playing, but this game is incredible. I like to share the experience of a great game with the people that I talk to frequently (most of whom share my religion).
I agree with Demme that a filter for NPC dialogue could probably be coded the same as the PC language filter. If this is not the case, then I understand the dev's decision to decline this request. Let them decide, though, instead of making blind assumptions.
I'm going to create a dedicated thread about the profanity filter soon. We've muddied up the OP's post, so I'd like to delete these from here after my thread is up.

This is why you're starting this campaign for less profanity? Dude.. Godsdamned is plural. This game has MULTIPLE gods. Not just one. They're not using it in vain to YOUR god. They're using it in vain of THEIR gods. GODS. Not GOD. This thread needs to be closed. I don't want to have to put up with RL Religion in comparison to a Fantasy World.

If you make a thread. KEEP RELIGION OUT OF IT. No one wants to put up with RL religion while playing an MMO to GET AWAY from the Real World.
