Played summoner alot "end game" but am not impressed with not being able to "burn down" anything. Anyone know what a good, sought after dps class is? I'm thinking BLM or BRD. I tend to see those both asked for alot in /shout for groups.

What SMN lacks in burst dmg, they make up for dots, utility and mobility
Bard is the most wanted DPS from my experience. Its attributes just fit for the mechanics of the (end)game:
- Ranged + Instant cast attacks = full upkeep on DPS unlike every other DPS, plus can kite a bit
- Great AoE
- Silence, useful in end-game especially
- Comparable max damage to other classes but because of its full upkeep it can/will easily score top DPS if the boss mechanics require frequent dodging or movement
- Songs make Bard desirable in every group, in every fight. Whether it's keeping the healers from going OOM or attacks from running out of TP or buffing the elemental damage of the group, there's always use out of songs.
Have you ever heard of a Bard trying to get into a group and someone says, "No way, not a Bard! They're useless!"? Me neither.
Just an anecdote in my case and not trying to dissuade you from playing Summoner or anything, but in my FC of 40 people there is currently nobody leveling MNK, yet I hear their single target damage potential is huge.
Personally I'm playing BLM and enjoying it a lot. They're pretty desirable in certain situations for their limit break, but Summoner can do the exact same one. On the other hand, movement heavy fights are a huge PITA for me, whereas Summoner can continue to keep damage going on their targets with their various DoTs.
If you're enjoying Summoner I'd say keep playing it, but there's nothing wrong with trying out other things. You might find there's something else you like better.
I'm pretty sure summoners will be the most wanted DPS as soon as people realize they are doing 30-50% more than any other DPS, yes including bards. They are insanely good. Ignore the fact that yes, maybe they don't have burst (though they have Fester but that takes 7.5 sec or Bane for AoE), but their single target is off the charts insane. Not to mention they can DPS as well as bards in movement intensive fights with pets PLUS DoTs still doing damage and even Ruin II.
least wanted is probably MNK, but really, there's not any glaringly weak class atm. The balance is really not that bad right now.
SMN is a really solid DPS. While their ability to spike damage in an emergency situation is limited, if the burn period lasts at least long enough for all your DOTs to wear off, you're still going to do fine.
BRD > BLM > SMN > DRG > MNK
This is my personal ranking.
BRD is mandatory for Coil. Most will bring 2 to avoid having the PLD use silence. Top dps + group utility.
BLM have good synergy with BRD.
SMN lack of burst is a problem for end game content.
Melees have too much disadvantage.
Even if MNK dps is higher, DRG have more hp and def.
Yea... BRD is definately the top wanted dps class...really thinking of switching mains from DRG for this reason and the fact that DRGs are so popular due to looking badass
Shame monks are so low... are dragoons really that much better?
No, Monks are just more susceptible to boss mechanics.
Monks bring slightly more defensive utility than Dragoons (traited Mantra). Dragoons bring slightly more offensive utility (Disembowel, assuming you have Bards).
Monks do slightly higher sustained single target DPS if they're able to position and don't lose contact for 10s on targets.
I'll probably try out both anyway, thanks for clarifying :)
I wouldnt suggest you to play a Bard although they are very usefull. Just because there are soooooo many of them. Everyone plays one. And because they get all hyped by the forum and everywhere even more ppl will play them. PLay Bard only if you really like the class not because every party could use one. There will be always enough Bards anyway.
Basically it goes like this
Bard>BLM>MNK>DRG>SMN
Right now parser for smn count everyone dots making him look like hes out dpsing.
BLM is a class with some good skills that maybe people don't appreciate as much. When a healer is under pressure due to a lot of adds it's the BLM that can burn them down AND CC them effectively taking them out of the battle. Bard might have better sustained dps but the BLM's burst and CC's are also really important and shouldn't be so easily discounted.
that's not how it works, and sMN is definitely not on the bottom. the bug with the most widely used parser is bio and bio II (specifically) are being inflated due to them not having an initial hit of damage. It's not 'counting everyone's dots.' You also need to remember to add together the master and pet's damage.
SMN is tricky. DRG, MNK, BRD and BLM with good gear can derp with their skills and still put up respectable damage. SMN, on the other hand, is really, really easy to mess up.
A well played SMN with matching gear can be equal to or higher than every other DPS class, depending on mechanics. The problem is that most SMN's I've seen have no idea what they are doing. Using Garuda to clear trash instead of Ifirt? Not properly timing Raging Strikes+DoTs+Contaigen on bosses? Having huge swaths of DoT downtime because you're not managing your timers? Casting the strongest and most useful DoT (Shadow Flare) last? Not managing Aetherflows properly? If a SMN messes up any of these, their DPS is going to fall off a cliff.
In any event, as it stands now, BRD is easily the most wanted DPS thanks to how easy they are to play (ranged, full mobility), but for all the other classes, especially SMN, it really comes down to play competence.
Well I dropped my 50 summoner and just leveled my bard to 50. I'm glad I did. Summoner was awesome leveling up but the bard imo is so much better in 50 instances.
every job can be great IF you find a GOOD player. sad to say, 90% of people that play MMOs are not very good at them. understanding abilities and just plain reading tips on how to maximize the job is the best idea. play what you like but also dont be a gimp, nobody likes "that one guy" that dose not understand how to play his job and causes people time and a possible run.
Monk is least wanted.
Squishy melee, dps suffers the most when it can't attack without interruption, no good aoe skill.
Monk is least wanted , if a monk messes up his rotation and drops his buffs he wont do proper DPS , as in like burst aoe its kinda decent (HF and RB)
Im a lv 50 summoner in Coil and i am VERY desired. High DPS, easy to dodge, and utility. Full Darklight and Relic +1, things drop. I go Bio, Bio II and miasma, then Ruin 1 quickly followed by ruin 2 at the end then fester then ruin 2. Last part of rotation alone is about 1200 damage without crits in a couple seconds (ruins are about 180 each x 3 = 540, fester is about 650-700). Then add dots and pet damage...Damage reduction skills for those hard hitting bosses. How could you not want at least one?
SMN will be the least desired once crystal tower is out because of the 30 debuff limit on all the mobs even more so when you all run into each other and do crystal tower bosses where you will be screwed with how many debuffs people can apply.
Honestly, once the Bard hype is over everyone will be screaming SMN because of their DPS and ability to battle res. :\
Maybe the reason they put in the 30 debuff cap was so you can't stack the strongest DPS class in the game.
Ok 24 man. 30 cap. 2 dots every dps 5 dots on smn. hmmmm.....
Yea even monks use 3 dots + blunt debuff so there are 4 slots just for a monk. 30 cap for 24 man will be a bad joke for a lot of classes, but would hurt ACN/Monk the most followed probably by bards since they proc bloodletter off their 2 dots.
Every class is fine and needed for end game just play what you enjoy and save yourself the headache of trying to find the favor of the month.
As a SMN, I feel really unpopular...
For example the Garuda fight.... why the heck should I keep "Ruin"ing one the clones just to appear like I try to nuke it (or the plumes) if I could deal much more damage by applying the 3 main DoTs+Disease to all 3 Garudas?? (since I know my burst is crap)
And on top of that, you get yelled for not actively attacking anything if you have to constantly swift-revive people because you notice the healers are busy to keep the party alive. (even with Aetherflow, we can run out of mp rather quickly with the raising you know..). And on top of THAT, you should micromanage the pet for the max potential. Too much utility lol.
As for Bards... high demand in almost every situation. They are real dps beasts too!
It's a shame that the monk isn't played that often, in the hands of a skilled player they become boss slayers!
I always thought BLM>SMN in terms of popularity.
So it's somewhat like BRD>BLM=LNC>SMN=MNK
