I don't know Gifthorse but that's the game I signed up for.
I read XIV interviews and was amazed at what I was reading. I just couldn't wait for it to come out since it sounded like a MMO I could only dream about. However, that's not the case and that vision seemed to have changed a bit. Even when I first joined the first thing that hit me was the level bar.
I still hope Yoshida pulls this off but I don't know what happened to the original plan even with Tanaka as leader.
they realised they didnt have enough content to justify people playing so they added grind as a prerequisite to content.
And it snowballed from there.
You do understand that the interview where wrong right? Tanaka said they wont be levels he did not mean they wont be a type of level up system. Rank is really not your level it's just your Wep level like in FFXI you level up your wep to unlock WS and so on.
That why it bad to read some interview before SE have time to really make it clear on what there doing.
Gifthorse you speak the truth.
They compromised on their original vision, short on time or imagination. I remember when there was a rumor that only underwear would affect your stats and all other gear would be just for looks. Tanaka even said you could be a mage wearing heavy armor. Alas, what happened to that game?
I dont recall any of that being said lol.
As far as "no leveling" that is not a correct translation. He meant that instead of having standard exp like we see in xi, we would have classes that equal weapons, and that we would level weapons like we do in ffxi. It's basically a system built around skill ups, hence the new community re-name "SP".
As far as some of the other things you mentioned. SE did try those options, and they sounded good on paper, but they obviously did not have lasting effects. You can't have an MMO with a system that does not have a lasting effect =/
I think instead of reading into Tanaka's interview too much where he said there won't be levels, we should look to the past. It's obvious to me that Tanaka was trying to mold the game after FF2, a game where you literally didn't have a level, you just had stronger skills the more you used them. More powerful hand to hand attacks, or fire magic. I do believe that was the original basis for FFXIV and only after compromise did they add in Ranks and Physical Levels. In other words I think that originally, there were no ranks, just skills that increased from the skill points. But just like everything else in this game they couldn't see the whole picture and just compromised so they could get something that would run live.
They are not smart enough to do what they had in mind and fell back on what they knew and the risk they took trying to do something good has caused this massive fk up they're now fixing. By going back to what they know best. And old system that works.
I know he meant we'd have weapon skill up parties instead of levels, but last I checked... I also have a level. So translation or not, they compromised on that idea and many, many, many others that I was excited about until I played retail. Even told myself in Beta they were waiting for launch to pull out the big punches. Sigh.
What's most amusing is how the original site still has stuff that ... will presumably never exist.
Miner being my personal favorite. I check it every now and then to see if they'll even bother to ninja edit their wrong information.
OMG you are right! I checked the official site after reading your post and wow. It lists PUG as having a steal ability "based on stealth", and says miner "can use mineral compositions to debilitate enemies". It also says PUG has multiple stances, but doesn't say how to activate them. I guess this last one is technically true. Just, wow though.
yeah im still waitin for myshoulder tackle, im sure archer wishes they had trinity and poison arrows, and does shreiker exist/make mobs run away?
there is a lot we have yet to see that they said they would have soon after release, least the got rid of participation in the arena of ul dah, and gambling. really if they executed a lot of this stuff properly, people would have loved the game.
Whatever happened to the tech demo of that game?
It's so strange SE would let their official site go united, and leave features on it that are not implemented in the game. They need to fix that crap.
At first when they said "there will be no level" I thought this gonna be like "The last remnant Online"
but well... I hoped too high.
Heh. Well my first thought was "How would that ever work in an MMO? How will they have character progression?" Skilling up your weapon ranks is fine, but I didn't know about that when I first heard "No levels." The level grind compromise, though, really isn't a big deal compared to all the other hype that wasn't delivered. Some of that stuff I really wanted in a game and got me really worked up to play XIV.
That game sounds so good. It gave me that warm exciting feeling I had when I read about FFXIV pre-release...
Imagine a game with no idiots
Where no one played like 12 year olds
where no one put on r50 gear at r1
where the babies didn't get spoon fed
where the game is actually fun without these people ruining it
This is the game I signed up for, but people like gifthorse cause so much grief ; ;
Although I've disagreed with gifthorse in other forums, its been mainly on his tone, lately though he's been making a lot of sense. There is a lot promised to us on the website (which I check religiously before the game came out), that we don't get in this game. They should take that information off the website. Honestly if I want to play an mmo the first place I go is a wiki or mmosite, and then I go to their main website. The XIV website is misleading.
yeah i actually wondered about that, i guess they have an asterix somewhere that says is subject to change, but if you have already changed, do you have a responsibility to tell people? Going off that site, your going to get a very different experience for a number of classes.
