Anyone else want the new materia system to keep the name "Materia" when it's implemented.
I know I do!
i say sure...
I'm not so sure about recycling the name, it really depends on what the system really consists of. I'd feel pretty ignorant to vote yes on a system that is nothing like FFVII. No offense in any way. But sure, if it is like FFVII in most ways, i'm down for keeping the name.
Whether it be a project name or the in-game name.
They Recycled Magicite for FFXI they should Recycle Materia for XIV.
I agree, so I guess they are just gonna have to make the system like the actual materia system...or maybe I am missing the point :)
In one Dev post somewhere they mentioned that it's the name they have been using, they don't know if it will remain that. Sorry I cant find the source right now.
I bet they keep it and use it in their promotion campaign for the PS3 release...I mean It would definitely catch the attention of the FFVII fans. Me personally, I don't care its just a name, but it might give a cool nostalgic feel to the system.
This was already done in the crafting sub-forum in which yoshi-p commented and said he agreed that he also wanted to keep the name.
So goes without saying that the chance of keeping this name is very high.
I don't really care too much.
If it's like 7's system, sure, keep the name. But if it's different enough to be it's own thing, or if it's more like a system from another FF game, I say change it.
I don't care about the name but make it work like materia or IX skill slots please!
Thats one thing I am wondering about. What kind of Content will Materia hold for us? Skills? Abilities? I mean, we already learn lots of skills from different classes (subject to changing of course.)
Crafting is also getting a revamp, meaning you can craft two of the same item and they will come out having different stats. Now how Materia would work is beyond me, but any info regarding this system would very very insightful.
Chance are they will be similar to WoW's gem socketing, additional stats to armor such as strength, accuracy, intellect, mind, def etc.
Possibly stuff like bug killer, demon killer, plant killer etc.
I like the materia name. It doesn't need to be exclusive to FFVII. There are tons of FF games that reuse terminology. Considering the highly technological aspect of FFXIV, materia could surely fit inside the premise we were presented.
if it's the same materia system from VII, i think it's alright, but if not, please change... don't use a name just for the name, i think it cheapens it for both VII and XIV.
I always assumed those structures were for the Magitek weapons the empire has.Quote:
If you go to bluefog (north Ul'dah) there are those mysterious looking ether factories as well, so it makes sense that they could be extracting Materia from Erozea.
Keep the materia name.
Of course, but when people read it as Materia, they think, "Oh! FFVII!"
However, if the system works completely different in this game, these people will not be able to relate to such a system that was present in FFVII, thus being turned away.
If adding stats like STR, DEX, etc. is the Materia system, then getting rid of the Physical Level seems like the equilibrium in implementing Materias that alter Stats.
I do love the Bug Killer, Man Killer, etc. Idea. I played FFIX again before the release of this game, and a system like that would be great! I was also hoping you'd just get Skill Points and have to spend them on learning abilities to crossover between classes. Ex. You have to have a White Staff equipped to learn Cure, Cure costs 150sp. If you dont learn it, then you cant use it without that weapon being equipped. etc.
Same aspect of Materia in FFVII, and I doubt we would be able to have an SP system like i mentioned above to learn passive skills we could equip. Right now, the equivalent to that is the Guild Marks, and the skills we spend them on.
There are definitely a lot of interesting things they could do with "materia" I mean heck look at what they did with the evoliths in xi. As long as they do not ham string there use with a "cool on paper" system like synergy they could really open up a whole new realm of possibilities when it comes to augmenting your performance with gear and have it be accessible to a good majority of the player base.
In the end i do not really care what it gets called, as long as it is easy to use and the enhancments are noteable enough to warrant caring about
Heck indeed -.-Quote:

A petition to change one detail about something that probably won't happen. Too funny.
sure keep the name but im more on the side of who gives a crap. What ever it a cool name and im all for it but im not going cry if name changes or stays the same. as long as it help me enjoy the game
This is serious bizzniss.
Personally I would just love to see a great system be introduced, but to be honest if they called it the materia system, it would be the icing on the cake. Therefore I could and hopefully will "have my cake and eat it too"

Didn't Yoshida himself say he liked the name? Pretty sure he's going to keep it.
did yoshi not say he want to keep the same name? i saw him posting about it :) agreeing to someone else about this issue.
edit: nvm someone link it lol
I say no. Mana gems are not materia. Now if they want to get rid of class abilities and put in Materia, I'm all for that.
Think it through though. Materia is a battle system not just a slotting system. If you take the battle out of Materia you have nothing. So you are taking nothing and adding the name Materia to it, congratulations you have just wasted a cool system and got excited about nothing. I hope they do add Materia, but they add Materia to it's full capacity. They need a way out of this split abilities / split classes dilemma anyway.
They've already announced their two choices for parts of the job system and none of it involves materia. The materia system giving us skills does not work well with this type of game. If you did it that way your entire inventory would be full of materia. It honestly wouldn't change the fact that most skills aren't class specific and actually gives a reason for no skill to be class specific at all. The materia doesn't care what kind of equipment it's slotted in and wouldn't decrease in efficiency either way, outside of character stats.
The materia system being a gem/slot system works perfectly fine.
You're right that it wouldn't change the fact that skills aren't class specific. To that I say: exactly! It wouldn't have to be in our inventory. Like the skills we slot now aren't in our inventory. I think they should make a hybrid job/materia system wherein jobs are masters of certain materia that they gain access to.
But back to the thread gemming isn't worthy of the materia name in my opinion.
Ready and waiting for this to be implemented!!

I mentioned this in one of my previous letters. These new concepts are not limited to simply new elements in the synthesis process, but also aim to stimulate the economy as much as possible. Through crafting, we plan to breathe new life into the game’s economy by improving gilflow and the distribution of items, and ultimately improving both the merits of, and motivations for, all classes.
Among the devs, we are tentatively calling this the Materia System, though that name may change. This new system will allow Disciples of the Hand to fuse materia to weapons and armor using special catalyst items gathered by Disciples of the Land.
* Disciples of War and Magic can customize and personalize their gear
* Disciples of the Hand can answer the materia-fusing needs of others
* Disciplies of the Land can gather catalyst items to meet the realm’s demands
I’ll be posting more details on the Materia System at a later date.
Thought I might bring that up, since I want the materia name and Naoki Yoshida said it "may change"
