I'll just break it to you easy first.
VGcharts is known to be notoriously bad at getting their numbers right. If it did sell this much with all the bad press it's been getting then colour me very suprised to say the least. The developers would have to put a astronomical ammount of work into the server structure then because the game could originally hold what like 250K Yoshi said? He then added a few worlds and increased the cap and still having alot of issues (Not as bad but still there)
Good sales are good for the game though, but like alot of MMO's it's really about who can stay beyond the honeymoon phase and when you reach the endgame so fast it will be interesting to see if we ever get solid numbers out of SE (I doubt it) How quickly they drop or how well they sustain over the next 6 months. -

Most people I know that were not 1.0 bought digital copies.
All Legacy and 1.0 (there were a lot) got their 2.0 copy free.
To top that of their numbers from VGchart have notoriously been inaccurate. You also have to look at when those chart numbers were put together.
If that is just pre-order than that is very good.
My guess is after subs start the total will settle to around a million which is about what FFXI had before things shrank after 8 years.
regardless of the number SE was expecting to make a profit just on the numbers they had, They exceeded that by multiple times to the point they had to halt sales.
After about a year look at the number of subscribers that will tell you if it is a success or not. As long as SE continues to make a profit causing them to put out more content regularly then I consider it a success regardless of the number of people. -

All vgchartz SUPPOSEDLY tracks is retail. It does not count people who had 1.0 but didn't buy it (me). It doesn't track digital. It doesn't track SE's official site. I don't think it even tracks amazon. vgchartz is fking worthless tbh, and they make up numbers often, or get their numbers from a "research" firm that will make stuff up as well.
