I'm wondering this too.
I joined Balmund server to be with my RP'r friends who came to FF14 together, and also to join the other RP'rs who've made Balmund the unofficial RP server. While I was testing the water I created a temporary character, now I know what I want to do and have a robust character concept and an appropriate FC to join... I can't actually join them.
For me it's hardly any better than having 1017... I can play, but only if I play a character that I'll be disposing of in the near future thus making it a waste of time and effort to do so. Unfortunatly, unlike 1017 they arn't going to refund your time spent sitting on your hands waitting for the server to open so that you can play with the people you wanted to be with.
Im starting to get the feeling this overpopulation problem is going to fix itself at the end of the free time. So if they wait a little longer im sure they will reopen servers . Its only been a week since release and there are tons of new players at 50 already talking about being bored. First, grats on rushing to endgame. Second, SE made leveling way too easy and fast. I think SE knows this is going to happen too which is why they aren't going to waste resources only to have to merge servers 6 months from now. There a alot of players checking this game out right now that wont be here next month.
I'll be subbing for a long time but just wanted to put in my 2 gil on the subject.
The level 50s being bored must be too cowardly to try Bahamut's coil.
Ya, it'll fix itself by making people leave.
It's only logical that when someone buys this game, they are entitled to play the 30-days attached... after all, it's included in the initial cost.
Especially when that someone bought the game because they expect to play it with their friends and family only to find it impossible ... and now they're "asked" to wait out their 30-days which they've already paid for? I'm really neck deep in this one, I've asked a couple friends that bought the game just so we can play together... and it isn't turning out quite working.
What am I going to say to them? Wait for 30-days and perhaps they can finally play? Maybe I should just "refund" their money out of my own pocket?
I (re)started balmung from a JP server to join some friends. Sadly, it's ruled by 50's, and those that aren't are scrambling to be with their friends at 50, so it's a grind fest to 50 and end game shouts. No RP to speak of that I saw playing since it started, only focus on "beating the game". I've rerolled on a new server.
Wow really? Balmung a LEGACY server is ruled by level 50's? Go figure! As for the RP, you have to find it, it/RP isn't going to find you! And yes it's a grind fest, because that's what the game is for right? I mean yeah were the unofficial RP server and all, but were still an FF14 ARR game server, and I see a lot of people playing the game. Enjoy your new server.
ooo ooo! RPer fight! Please describe the exchanging of blows in an RP fashion :)
I'd also like to know when servers will be open again for character creation. I know a few people who want to play with the group of friends who I'm currently playing with but they're locked out of Cactuar right now. Any updates would be appreciated.
Well if they were smart they would bust out with those Server passes that Final Fantasy XI had. Servers are to congested and they want players to spread out, thats fine. Offer player the chance to get a server pass from friends who are already on that server, but lockout the server from general admittance. It cuts out the random people rolling toons there, but allows guilds and friends and family to get people on one server without having to wait days, weeks, months...
You did not expect them to fully open all worlds as soon as maitenance was over, right...? They now need to fill in the new spaces for each server, old and new (do remember that Worlds not support ~7500 players). And it seems server capacity may be increased FURTHER if needed, maybe to 10000 players.
To this, add optimizations to increase the amount of players ON SCREEN (mainly for PS3), which I hope are soon to come.
Do not expect servers to be fully opened anytime soon. Battles take days; wars take years, and this is a war to achieve the game's success.
A 50 from a Legacy server complaining about another Legacy server being crowded with 50s.

It will fix itself no doubt. People will simply stop caring AND the power levelers will move on leaving many servers a ghost town. I'm not worried as I don't have any friends playing this one. But if I did we would have found something else to do by now.
Maybe if everyone didn't flock to the same server it wouldn't be a problem. Let this be a lesson, never go to the most popular server at a MMO launch.
This is what I have been thinking as well. I've seen numerous examples of cases where the floodgates have been broken down upon release and they have caved and opened loads of new servers. It has enabled everyone to play comfortably that first month, but when the population inevitably dwindles one has been left with empty servers or the need to merge them. Neither situation is ideal, really.
I'm a bit sad at the moment that I can't play with my fiance, though....
I've been one of those scrambling to get to 50 and to get main storyline done. But I've seen quite a lot of RP (I pass by a couple of vignettes every day, it seems), a lot of it is in the small hamlets away from the main cities (Wineport, Forgotten Springs etc). It may be easier to look up RP forums online and find a group first rather than hoping to stumble on it by accident as the world is much more full of character than it was in V1 and I think RP'ers are taking advantage of that.
So am I reading correct that only one server has character creations disabled still and all others are opened once again? I haven't see any updates from the admin posting about what servers have character creation disabled on them since yesterday afternoon.

Have some friends that have been trying to create on Diabolos since launch with no luck, including over lunch hour yesterday (looks like he just missed since Diabolos wasn't on list in first post)
Actually as of now, 6 are closed out. The rest are open to character creation. You just gotta wait until early early morning. They start opening up.
