Maybe you should try and get adjusted to it before you knock it. It's an amazing tool once you've gotten used to it. :)
I think it functions far better and is indefinitely more responsive.
I've been trying since beta.
I prefer 1.0 bar. I can't even imagine trying to play fast paced when we're level 70+ with even more abilities.
BRB trying to claim a mob only to call my chocobo, or hit heal, or whatever else but the intended ability to claim the mob.
No thanks Jeff.
SE please provide us with 1.0 bar as an option.
Like I told my LS.. maybe I'm partially retarded.. either way, I hate struggling with game play only because the device I'm using is so limited yet packed with waaay too many things.
If you go into the Character options, switch it from "Controller mode" to" Mouse and Keyboard mode." That will change the crossbars back into the regular straight bars.
I like the cross bar never had a problem with it. It's how you lay it out.
I like the crossbar. I find it works well, at least for me. I don't know if there's a way to cycle backward through the pages, though RB cycles forward.
Just curious, what exactly is the difference between the two? I didn't play in 1.0.
Edit: Ah okay, for the PS3 it's that you either hold L2/R2 down and hit triangle/X/O/square or the directional pad, or switch it so you only have to tap L2/R2 then press any of the buttons.
Its your typical MMO bar, like in WoW, SWtOR, City of Heroes, etc. A straight bar with your binds on 1 through 0
It was a pain to use with a controller through because you needed to select each item on the bar individually with the D-Pad and activate it with A. I don't know if the binds are changed for this version, but the 1.0 hot bar was very very controller un-friendly.
No? It's two horizontal "macro" bars.. As soon as I hit X once to put the cursor on the mob I'm facing, then X again to engage (weapon drawn out), I should have the ability to scroll left/right and up/down to choose my abilities..
In your claim, I need to use the keyboard.. so the PS3 controller is left with very limited options.
crossbar it works but it not better then 1.0.
targeting modes dont stay on the settings you set the always revert back to ALL or OTHER.
SE screwed up removing <st> macro placeholders. <tt> place holder is fail it picks random people in a fight.
I didn't say it would work with the controller, and also saw no indication that you wanted to use the controller, so yes, if you want to use a controller, you're currently stuck with the crossbars. As far as the original bar goes, I don't see why they would bring it back. It was very tedious to use to say the least. I will say, pertaining to your remark about having many more abilities equipped, a way to cycle back through the bars with the controller instead of just forward would make it better.
Well, once they add the ability to create user mods, I'm sure some masochist will probably make the 1.0 bar again.
Of course why anyone would want that one back is beyond me, but different strokes, I guess!
As a gamer who has played a few mmos on the console, I have to somewhat agree with the OP about the cross bar. Its kinda hard to get use to. Though I am slowly getting adapted to the functions, I'd have to say if SE gave us an option to even somehow some way use a function like FFXI ...I'd be okay with that :o
it takes some slight learning sure. but eventually muscle memory starts doing all the heavy thinking for you, and you'll be fine. Remember that holding R1/LB and then pressing any face button or dpad direction will swap to another set of skills. so you can set all of your abilities into different bar sets and hotswap between them with fantastic speed and efficiency once you're used to it.
Adding to the above, are you people even using the config options SE has given you? There are more than enough options for grouping, switching and filters in passive/active mode can be freely adjusted as well. You can even cycle through 4 filter presets (when enabled) via L1+OXロ△.
The rest is personal ability to remember which combination you mapped which skill and also coordination ability to know whether you are currently holding L2/R2 or not and keeping in mind what you are currently trying to do.
Personally, I got used to it pretty quickly and can now execute almost any skill without thinking/looking where it is on my crossbar. The system is working fine and is worlds ahead of having huge travelling distances between skills on the regular bars on 1.0
Do you even remember what the 1.0 bar looked like and how it functioned?
I'm trying to strictly use a controller.. It would be ridiculous to say the least, that I use a controller to move my character around and move the camera around and then hop onto the keyboard to fight mobs.
And using a keyboard/mouse sucks when it comes to moving your char + the camera simultaneously, specifically compared to a PS3 controller or a controller with joy sticks for that matter.
Derp.
Because it's stupid to have abilities on your D-Pad when you have multiple targets? Or when you have other players to sustain?
It is silly to hold down R1 press up/down/left/right or O X Square Triangle and guess about 100 times until you are able to finally memorize one of eight sets of abilities.
as was proven in the beta feedback thread regarding gamepads there is a huge percentage of people that dislike the controller setup for arr. there was such massive feedback on the issue during beta that they commented on the issue multiple times.
the setup used in arr is a love/hate relationship. you either love it or hate it. my ls is close to 50/50 supporting and disliking them. i don't see where bringing back the option to use the 1.0 setup for those that enjoyed that system would be a bad thing for the ones that enjoy the current system.
I personally love the crossbar, but what it could use is a third set of 8 (L2+R2) as at 50 with some classes it would be great to not have to switch cross bars to access skills you use on a regular basis. If I recall correct they will be adding in the future, just was not ready for launch.
As I recently switched from PS3 to PC I tied to use the keyboard (what I have used for every other MMO) and it was just strange and hard to get used to. I have started to use my ps3 controller on PC and enjoy everything again.
Point is, if you learn a game on one setup and switch to another it will be much harder to use the new system, but in time you can adjust. the best thing to do would be to level a new class on the new system to get used to it and adjust slowly (as you get more skills as you level) and then adjust for your level 50's.
Access to 16 skills with 1 single index and thumb. A quick bump and I have 16 more in rotation.(half second later and I can access 8 pages to pre-load from).
Making this an amazing tool once mastered. I approached with caution. But I love this thing, I can see how people will fly through commands once muscle memory kicks in.
And its easy to learn with such a minimal amount of input.
stop whining like a lil baby and learn to adapt.. the cross bar is fluid, fast, easy to learn and perfectly viable for all situations
^this, quoting for justice.
FFxi and FFxiv 1.0 way of using the controller was acceptable and viable because combat was slow and sluggish, you could afford to take 2 years to choose another skill ( exaggerating ). that control scheme wont wrk in ARR combat moves at a faster pace you'll be struggling to keep up.
I love crossbar. That's all.
If they ever do make an option for a 1.0 style controller actionbar, I hope it also comes with a name indicator so that I know to never, ever party with that person...
We should at least be given the option to use the straight bar or the cross bar for PS3 users. Or add a cross bar set to holding L2+R2 at the same time. Sometimes combat is way to fast for this crappy crossbar.
Umm no because the way it is now you have to cycle your Hotbar with R1 if we had the option to use the straight bar to me and it seems like to others it would be easier. If you don't want to use it then don't no one ever said that you had to use it.
How exactly is the crossbar slowing you down in any shape/form? If you're playing with a controller it is by far efficient. It shows youexactly what button to press to correspond with your controller, something with which the straight bar lacks.
You people are moaning fools who refuse to accept and understand the current system. That's all there is to it.
You all would still be pressing the exact same buttons regardless.
I dont like the cross bar either. I just want to use the D-pad on the regular bars.
they could leave the R1 bar toggle thing , but not the cross bar
and bring back L1+ R1 Macros ctrl / alt
there is no way the 1.0 method would be fast enough for 2.0 gameplay.
I like crossbar better than the long bar layout. It's made specifically for your controller, is smooth, works well, and feels natural as a naked baby bottom. Sorry OP, but can't agree with you on this.
I like the Crossbar. Even it's a bit limited compared to keyboard and mouse, I'm surprised that the devs put a lot of functionality on a controller and made it easy to use.
There are peripheral choices (controllers, keyboard+mouse) and lots of options for other players to tweak to suit their playstyles.
thats a lie you still have a GCD and you can attack and que up your next attack. only need one button to confirm my skill also
1.0 before auto-attack was way faster then 2.0 and it worked. you could kill mobs before the stamina bar went down.
we had a seprate macro menu which is gone now they removed the best placeholers also. the targeting modes are broken you set it to enemys then once you move off a mob it goes right back to ALL or OTHER.
I do not like the cross bar. Needs to be worked on.
I eventually plan to play with mouse and keyboard just for the functionality once they fix the no mouse cursor on Vista full-screen bug.
I have to say, I'm enjoying the cross hotbar on my PC.
I'm wondering if any of the complaints have to do with diving into starting withthe hotbar at level 50 with a full set of skills...
As you level you assign your skills the way you want on your bar, I can see if you get dropped in how you may be confused with what to press for your skills.
On the filters resetting, Have you tried turning off auto sheathe? I'm guessing when the weapon gets sheathed it defaults back to the 'all' filter preset, since sheathed has it's own set of filters iirc.
I'd say I enjoyed 1.0's action bar... on 1.0... primarily because battle was slower paced than it is now. I don't think I'd be able to keep up at all if my D-pad got locked to moving around the action bars instead of scrolling through party members and targets.
At first the cross bar was annoying to me too, but easily adapted to it since beta and now work extremely fast with it; since I know where I put things on different sets (kinda the same as knowing where you put your stuff in straight bar style). In essence its like comparing XI's straight bar macros for controller to this version; and now that I know how to work it, I'll keep the cross bar as its way faster.
Plus they've already said time and time again they are still looking for ways to further improve it and make it more seamless, which as it stands feels pretty good already. My only complaint is the lack of full customization, for example, R3 is locked to 3 different menus/skills etc etc.
I really like the cross bar, I disliked the pet bar but it was just a few mins to look through the options and now I have it turned off.
I also changed the option to have the bars be left hand trigger for D-pad and right hand for Face buttons rather then the default.
It's very fast and comfortable in my hands, I feel in control and can lean back while playing which is great for my posture ^_^
i don't know if anyone has mentioned but you can also make it so only 2/3/4 or however many bars you switch through by just tapping R1 in combat. You shouldn't need more than 2 sets when fighting so it'll simply be a case of tapping R1 to get to the next set rather than memorising R1+circle or whatever. Personally I love this cross hotbar and love that I can play using a controller. Most mmo's will not allow that at all and if they do it's incredibly clunky and just terrible.
OP I think you just refuse to try and get used to it which is silly if you then go and complain about it on a forum. I mean it's common for people to just run to the forum and complain because apparently that's all forums are for now, but really nobody can ever help you. The only chance you'll get the 1.0 bar would be as said in addons later in the year/next year. And that thread title - it's not good for YOU.
A 2.5s GCD? Oh, I think I'd struggle through somehow...
Seriously, I prefer the Crossbar, but that's just ridiculous. You don't think you can press left or right dpad once or twice every 2.5 seconds? You could hold down the dpad left or right and get all the way across the bar in half that.

I agree the crossbar take a bit of getting used to, but I prefer it over 1.0 or FFXI's control. But as a PC gamer using a controller I use the crossbar for combat skills and line bars for skills that you I use less often like buffs Protect and Stonekin, as well as things that you don't use often unless necessary like Raise or Resurrect. I should show a Screenshot of what my cross and hot bars look like to make total sense of it.
