More servers is not the answer...

The answer is to increase the capacity of the servers that we've already got. The last thing people want is everyone they know and who they play this game with to be scattered about across multiple servers b/c "world is full" or "server is not accepting more players". That's not an efficient development strategy especially when the game promotes friends and associates to participate as a group, in-game experiences, questing, etc.

Actually the people who don't know anyone, will be more inclined to play on a low population server.

If they offer free transfers to people to the unpopulated servers it will lower the stress.

Its actually a good idea and had they put some forethought into things, they would have had closer to 40 servers per group instead of 25.

They also would have broken the game up into clusters or groups of say 7-10 servers instead of all 25 trying to blitz through the same Duty Finder.

Finally, if they could eliminate the client tryign to access the JP and NA/EU servers at the same time (ie have two lobby servers selected by region on the login screen) their stress would have been better managed.

Yep I said this all day that the server capacity increase is an increase of severs available and not an increase in space for the servers. You'll still not get to play on the same server as friends unless most of the population moves which is highly unlikely if you play a legacy server.

Great ideas.

However, the concern is not the total number of characters, but the capacity for simultaneous connections. With code errors, late shipments, and digital sales having been shut down for days, the first wave of new servers might 1017 for a day or two themselves!

Or a week, or a month. Come by the Server Naming thread I set up and see if you have any ideas! Here

I was referring to those who do choose to group or party with friends, relatives - those they know irl. I totally agree that those who are soloing may prefer a low population server. And separating JP/NA/EU lobby is a great idea. But as of right now, I have yet to form a party with my friends because I can't add them to the list when they are offline or server connection or world full or some such tripe.

Transferring to other servers is kind of annoying... something always gets changed (e.g. map uncovered, settings, etc.)

I expect they may set up a system where by we can move to a new server WITH others to make sure groups can play together. It is an easy code set and can help a lot with the population shifts that will surely supplement the server increase.

I'm going to guess that the server people working for SE have a good idea what the problem is and how to fix it. Yoshida keeps mentioning the duty finder putting stress on the servers, and he thinks that increasing the amount of servers will lower the impact on each server from the duty finder. Maybe he's right...

That being said, each server can only handle up to 5000 simultaneous connections at the moment, and the more populated ones like Leviathan and Gilgamesh are going to still have problems unless they actually allow more people to log on at once. They are concerned about stability, but that is hopefully something the extra servers can help with.

The MO of this thread is correct, it needs more population not more servers, they have plenty of servers. Also, I'd like to say, and I've said it in other threads is they need to kick AFK Idlers...if they'd do that, the servers wouldn't be full all the time...that'd be a huge help to people who enjoy playing and not sitting there AFK.

I think they don't kick them, maybe for future having personal stores. Other Japanese MMOs have Personal Stores so AFK idling is 100% acceptable, in this time when we don't have this, there should be an AFK timeout of 15 minutes.

This makes A LOT of sense. You should be able to tell SE where you want to play then access ONLY the NA/EU or JP servers. I've gamed online for a LONG time and I've never met anyone that has said "hey guys I'll be on later, I'm going to play with my friends in Japan" lol I mean seriously. Most people that are in NA will only play on NA servers and same with JP players, although, when Aion was in Beta Test, we had more Asian players complaining of high pings on the NA servers than anything else. You get my point though.

servers can only handle so much traffic, thats the bottom line. you CAN NOT wave a wand and tell the servers to double capacity when its not possible. even ffxi to my knowledge has population limits. they need more servers and thats what they are doing.

A world is made of multiple servers. They might not be able to simply add more servers to the world to increase performance/capacity, it depends on the software they're using. Replacing the servers with faster/larger hardware may not be an option. So basically, adding more worlds is the best thing they can do at the moment unless they can add more servers to the world. They should really give people free character transfers to make use of the new worlds. Even better would be if your characters were kept on a central server and you weren't locked into always playing on the same server.

Vileguy, my beef with that is, what if you have a guild of 150 people and MOST of them want to stay where they are because they all have made friends and such in other guilds and whatnot...more world servers aren't the answer, it forces people to do things they shouldn't have to. I hate to use WoW as a reference but they hosted, at their peak, 11 million players at once....SE is reporting they only have 223,000 players, if WoW could handle a load of 11 million players, I think SE can come up with a solution that is better than "Lets make more servers and you can spread out your characters". I personally like to play on only one server.

At Hatori_Elric, that is true and false, you can upgrade the memory and capacity of a server to be able to handle more traffic, you can pay more and get more bandwidth etc. It seems to me that SE is not wanting to spend the extra money or maybe they don't know the technology that well to get stronger servers.
