Character or Toon?

Which nomenclature do you use and why?

What the hell "toon" means anyway.
A character, because that's what they are: character. Playable character, to be precise, opposed to non-playable character (or NPC).

Character, people calling it toons make me cringe.

This. Personally, I cringe every time I hear them referred to as "toons"

I use Character also but probably because the first mmo i played (FFXI) that was the commonly used word.

I agree with you. I tend to call my character a character. I think it has a lot to do with what games you have played. Most of my MMO time has been spent on FFXI with breaks to play 1.0 and a few Korean MMOs. The word toon wasn't used widely in any of the games I have played.

I don't call them "toons," but all of the hand-wringing about the term makes me want to start.

I call em by name.

Character, but who cares really? If you're offended by someone's innocent use of another term for a thing, you might want to stop playing multiplayer games and shelter yourself from any human contact.

I'll bite.

Character for my part. Setting aside the knee-jerk queasiness I feel in the face of people using the word 'toon', it's a simple case of what the two words suggest. 'Toon' suggests a caricature, something simple and shallow usually created to a specific end - say, humour, or to portray something in an extreme light.

Character on the other hand suggests the sort of depth and complexity I want my, well, characters, to have. I like to imagine what they're like and create stories around them. Forra is a young spearman wandering around after he lost his adoptive aunt, Rorina is trying to smuggle herself and her sister away from an unpleasant stepfather, and T'aemi I like to think of as an opportunity to explore the idea of the 'generic adventurer'.

So when people call my characters 'toons' it.. feels like they're devaluing all I've imagined about them. I make it a rule not to stop other people referring to their characters as such, however much I might dislike it, because that's their choice. But.. it's true I don't like the idea of the word being put beside my creations, no.

How about "Dudeman"?

I use them both, interchangably.

I mostly use character though. But honestly, how much "toon" seems to piss people off makes me want to use it a lot more.

I never said I was offended by the word toon. I was just simply trying to start a discussion on the general discussion forum that doesn't involve server status complaints, CE complaints, or AFK timers.

I call them characters in all MMO's I have played. Toons I think is a WoW term. We dont got time for dat!

I call them toons. I don't really care what other people call them, as long as I know what you're trying to say. Whatever floats your boat.

When people use toon, i can't help but make a face. It'll always sound ridiculous to me.

I honestly didn't care, face it... you know what they are talking about so what does it matter. Then all of the elitist snobbery and moaning started... now, forever more... toons.

I find it highly amusing that the same people who cant tell the difference between your, you're, were, we're, there, their, they're and finally my all time favourite... are and our (seriously?) are the ones making the most stink about toons and characters.

To answer an earlier question "why toons" it derives from characters... as in "cartoon character" thus: "Toon"

I always called them characters since the days of UO. I've taken to calling them toons out of spite after being in the beta and seeing how ridiculously stupid people get about that term being used.

Animated cartoon (n) - a motion picture consisting of a sequence of drawings, each so slightly different that when filmed and run through a projector the figures seem to move.

But if I had to pick one, I'd say Character. I don't understand the whole 'toon' thing.

I think my preference comes from being an avid reader and occasional writer. I wouldn't ever refer to anything as a toon, even with cartoons - I call them cartoon characters. *shrugs* Habit, I guess.

Characters. In no place does this game EVER mention the word toon, so why call it so? I know that in other games they call them toons, but just keep that to those games, and use the correct term for this game. It really is even a bit insulting to call them anything else.

Except you know what Zehira is referring to. Cartoon (in this case toon) is mainly known as the more American style for animation, while anime is the Japanese one. It has a lot to do with the proportions and body types.

I call them charatoons.

lmao how ridiculous some of you people are. Do you balk when someone calls a car an auto, automobile, a vehicle, or a ride? Better turn off your TV and computer, and never venture past your fenced yard, you might have your fragile lexicon offended by someone with a different dialect. You might even run into people with a completely different language!

Everyone knows that "horseless carriage" is the proper term for a motor vehicle, anyone who calls it something else is likely a commoner.

I've always said character, but I occasionally have had to "dumb it down" to Toon, as some people have acted confused when I say character ... they're like" you mean your toon?".

i used whatever comes to mind first, and people offended by the word toon make me want to use it even more

Toon = Cartoon. An animated program for viewing. Non-interactive. Usually meant for children.

Character = Defined by a specific set of properties; physical, visual, functional and/or behavioral, that identify any living thing or object, real or fictional, as specifically what it is. (ie: the characteristics of a person that defines him/her as a unique individual)

Cartoons have characters in them.

And I call them characters, or call them by their name. I also think it has to do with what mmo's you play/played first. It's like the soda vs. pop debate :p
