Regarding the Ability to Change Grand Companies and the Impunity from Punishment

** UPDATE YOU CAN IN FACT CHANGE GC AFTER MAIN STORY PROGRESSION / COMPLETION(?) **

Dear friends,

I bring this question to you most earnestly, allow me to explain my plight. I personally have previously invested some time into maxing out my Immortal Flames rank, and I have a great quantity of Grand Company gear purchased from them; mostly for crafting. Upon returning to the game I discovered that I could not use this gear as I had to complete the story quests once again in order to rejoin the Immortal Flames. I started to do the story quests last night, but in lieu of the instanced area problems I was forced to resign until a later time. I restarted my progress this afternoon, and much to my dismay something terrible happened.

I tend to be a very progressive player, I don't watch cut scenes, and I click through all of the text as fast as possible. I know this will be offensive to some of the more sensitive forum veterans, but I don't care about the story. I play to progress, and have fun times with my friends. Please forgive me.

One of the final quests sent me to the Serpent Personnel Officer, and he forcefully tricked me into joining the Twin Adders amid my rapid clicking, with much similarity to the way actor Michael Myers once asked fellow actor Brian Doyle-Murray in the great American classic Wayne's World, "a-sphincter-says-what". Of course to my misfortune I responded with a resounding "what".

Facetiousness aside, posting on a forum like this with a question is an emotionally trying experience, so let me first say that I take responsibility for my actions, I made a mistake, and I have much regret for it. To the more open minded of you, I bring to you two questions, please be gentle with me in your response, I have sensitive feelings:

#1 I presume that there is currently no way to change Grand Companies currently, if this is true, have and of you heard any news of when they will be adding this most mundane and standard feature?

#2 When I change my Grand Company, will I lose my rank with the Immortal Flames? Have you heard anything on the subject? If the answer is yes, then this would be most non-triumphant

Well I found your problem right there.

I haven't hit that part of the story yet where I get to do my GC once again but I imagine some poor clicking did you in. Just think of it this way, if your old GC gear is useless think of all the progressive playing you can do to get new stuff?

It's obvious that my distracted clicking did me in, and it's also obviously much more my fault than the fault of poor scenario design, we all know SE never makes poor planning decisions.

In regards to your suggestion, they did add new gear that I could make for each crafting class, but in lieu of having all crafts level fifty, the gear I had would be much more practical, and probably better under close inspection.

As always Jynx, thank you for your expedient response, regardless of the fact that it wasn't productive.

"Progressive player" huh. Yeah I suppose that's one way you could put it...

There will be a method of changing in the future, when you change your old seals and gear become locked but your rank will be the same if you then change back again, that much we know. What exactly it will take I don't think has been said.

You can change grand companies it seems. A Free Company mate joined the flames on accident (thinking the "..." was a cancel), went to the GC in limsa and spoke to the npc. They said they'd submit a "transfer" and it'd be free the first time, then he accepted and is now a Serpent.

Well regretfully I have to inform that this is either incorrect or a misunderstanding. When I talk to the Personnel Officer of both Immortal Flames and Storm Whatever's they tell me, and I'm paraphrasing here, to piss off. Unless perhaps I reach the final conclusion of the Twin Adders? Then perhaps it will allow me to switch? Hard to say.

I don't have a source to link you but iirc it was stated in one of the live letters(?) that you'd be able to swap between grand companies without losing progression in the previous one. As far as a method to do so, I'm not sure, sorry bud.

I would imagine at the end of the day GC gear isn't really the best endgame gear anyways so there is that for you.

I apologize then. I'll ask the FC mate exactly what he did to change and stuff when I get on tomorrow.

Well actually I'm not looking at the gear for content, I'm basically looking at it like this: They've added new AF gear for each crafting classes, however I have all crafting classes fifty, so I'm looking at what would be most productive for me to share gear between them, and also have close to the best stats. Some of the GC gear I have falls into the mix.

It would be a waste of materia for me to meld each of the new AF to achieve only slightly better stats than what I could have in gear that I could share between all of the classes with a few GC items mixed in.

Just spoke to him, he said the personnel officer at the company you wish to join.

i think your problem is that you haven't actually joined the GC yet (just selecting the officer isn't enough) you have to do the join GC quest. Heck, I think even at the end of the quest they give you an opt out then as well.

They're offering me promotions at the Twin Adders, are you sure?

Can anyone confirm or disconfirm if we are in fact in able to change GC at this point?

#1: I guess you can't. On beta 3 at least you couldn't.

#2: Someone once stated that this would happen, yes, when such feature is added to the game. So, the joke is on you, my frend, I'm sorry.

That's pretty much what the general consensus is sounding like. I just wonder if that is old information, and they've already added this feature. I'm wondering if I finish the story then if I will be offered a chance to switch.

Sorry to hear of your mistake, I sympathize. However, I am very curious on some more conclusive information regarding this. I'd like to switch between GC's eventually to collect all the achievements, but losing all the gear and points is pretty severe. I'd also like to know how difficult it is or isn't to switch, so keep us updated Mijin and good luck!

I just wanted to follow up for those of you who are interested in the topic. Big thank you to Mister Happy on Sargatanas who finished his main scenario quest today for confirming that some time during progression, you can in fact change Grand Companies. He didn't check until he was finished with the story line, so it's hard to say when you gain access to switch (my guess is after completion), but he did confirm that you can change freely after story completion for sure.

I'm very much relieved. :)
